Research in Motion (R.I.M.), the company that brought us the BlackBerry, has been on a roll lately. For a couple of years now, it’s delivered a series of gorgeous, functional, supremely reliable smartphones that, to this day, outsell even the much-adored iPhone.

The Storm can display a touch-screen Qwerty keyboard, above, or SureType keys.
Here’s a great example of the intelligence that drives R.I.M.: The phones all have simple, memorable, logical names instead of incomprehensible model numbers. There’s the BlackBerry Pearl (with a translucent trackball). The BlackBerry Flip (with a folding design). The BlackBerry Bold (with a stunning design and faux-leather ...

Yes, the reviews have not been so good thus far. Verizon Wireless made a serious blunder (one of the first I have seen) by releasing this phone before RIM had the bugs worked out.

I have used it, I love it. the hardware is perfect in my opinion. once the software is up to the task it will be a winner.

Agreed, Midnight. The problems Pogue pointed out will easily be hammered out in software updates. Pogue even pointed out in his precious review of the iPhone that it wasn't perfect at launch, he just spent far less text on the page devoted to the initial release problems.

I wonder if its coincidental that Pogue has a new book out "iPhone: the missing manual". Seems that if a phone stole some of the iPhone's "thunder" (hahaha pun inteneded), he could see some short sales on his book.

Agreed, the storm has some issues to be worked out, but every phone does. I think Pogue just had some external influence in his review to spend a little more time downplaying it than what was really necessary.

Either way it's not a phone that should be bought today imo, I'll stick with my Curve for awhile.

yeah I feel ya. The curve was the first phone in a while that I am not trying to find a replacement for. I just want the increased processor speed of the bold (and more memory). I played with the bold at an att store and it was stunning. Hopefully they dont change much for the verizon edition.

yeah, the bold is an amazing device. Im hoping for some improvements for the verizon edition (upgraded camera, new black trackball, faster processor, etc). I guess now we just play the waiting game.

These reviews are so harsh. I've had the Storm for a week now and I love it. I can't say I really have any complaints. They keyboard took me about 30 seconds to figure out and I've been on a roll since then. The only real complaint I have is with the screen turning from landscape to portrait. On occasion, maybe once a day.. the screen will decide not to change. Usually after a few minutes or going in a program and out it will decide to switch for me. I'm sure that will be addressed in a software update. Other than that I'm good. Great phone.
