Using your minutes on the 1X network is not actually an option. However, the 1X service is available for free, but only for those features that are going to be using it as Verizon is attempting to phase out the 14.4 connection and replace it with the faster 1X service. If indeed others are able to use the 1X feature and just use their minutes, once the network catches this and realizes that customers are using it for more than what it was originally for (i.e. faster Mobile Web, Get It Now, and Pix Msg) the network automatically removes the feature and pretty much forces the customer to pay for it.
