Droid Pro question/ Rant (sorry)

Is there any way to remove the "stock" apps/programs that I don't' want and never will without rooting the phone? Skype, City ID, etc.... I have not downloaded them and NEVER open them yet almost every time I go to my task killer, they are listed as running. So apparently they run on their own and use up battery (which sucks to begin with). If I can't delete them, any way I can make it so they don't run? That is pretty much my only complaint about Droids....I understand that some apps need to run for other things to work but I can't think of any reason why Skype, City ID, VZ Navigator, Amazon MP3, Voice Command would need to run if I don't open them and as "little of a problem" that it may seem to be, it really pisses me off. I had a bl...

You're running a 2.2 device, so it's (hopefully) not doing anything. if it IS doing something, you're RUINING your phone. Full stop. I don't care about how it improves your battery life or makes things run faster. At best most of it is a placebo and any real gains can be safely recreated by spending a little bit of time making your phone run correctly.

Having your RAM on your phone FULL of apps consumes NO MORE POWER than having the RAM empty. Moreover, the Android OS will start programs up to fill empty space because it's using energy to power it anyway, so if you're constantly killing stuff, you're constantly forcing the OS to boot up new apps (consuming energy) that it would not have to consume, if you just left it alone.

There is no way to get rid of those apps without rooting (you can't remove bloatware from blackberry either, just hide it) You can hide the links using Launcher Pro.

I prefer the ADW.launcher over LauncherPro, but they both offer app drawer filtering:

The G2 has a 3D app drawer, any idea how I can make my app drawer on my original Motorola Droid 3D?

I'm an engineer. I care about functionality, not aesthetics. I have disabled live wallpapers, widget animations and every other "pretty" nuance I can find on my Android.

I don't even know what the 3D app drawer is...

Yep.

Open the drawer, hit the Menu key, hit "Choose Group" then create a new group. Then you can edit the new group to show whatever icons you want.

To be fair, this doesn't hide icons in the same way LauncherPro and BlackBerry do. It allows for the creation of multiple app drawers that you can flick back and forth between.

The "all-in" app drawer cannot be deleted, but I just have mine default to the filtered app drawer with only the 20 things I actually use regularly.

As the others stated, get rid of your task killer. It will cause you more issues down the road. You do not need them with Android, especially 2.2. Also, those apps really aren't doing anything. They are listed but the way Android works they aren't really doing anything or using any of your battery. The Android OS is very good at the way it does thing including memory management and whatnot. Rest assured all the apps that are running are not causing your battery to be used any quicker because they aren't really doing anything. They're just loaded in to background memory for quicker access basically.

The only way to actually get rid of them is to root your phone. I've been there and done that and noticed NO performance difference or...

so even though vzw corp trainers told me this was an app I needed to put on every customers phone because it does all the things you guys are saying it doesn't do..... I shouldn't? I have an Ally with 2.1 would this apply to my phone as well? not the speediest phone in the world so every little bit helps..... but am I making it worse with this task killer?

It seems to do a little more on the 2.1 than it does on 2.2. 2.2 actually disables what the task killers do and makes it worse. They CAN possibly be a small benefit on 2.1 devices that are slower. I personally don't recommend them at all.

Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation with task killers and even people within Verizon tell people they need them. Just think about where it comes from though. Usually higher ups that don't really have technical knowledge are the ones that tell sales people they need to push these things. Heck, even a lot of sales people don't have technical knowledge. They think they are helping.
