which has better voice coverage other than data? for those who have verizon or att phones when you look at your phone i noticed on att the signal goes up and down even without moving from one spot. does the same thing happen on verizon phones? in other words does att phones hold on to network signal better or does verizon have a more steady signal? i want to order cell service but i am stuck between these two? verizon has nice touch screen phones the only thing is you have to get a data plan to get those phones. would you get the data plan even though you may not want it just to get the better touch screen phones?

Verizon has the best voice network in the United States overall. No joke. You can have 1 or 0 bars and still place a clear call. If you want touch screen, the LG Chocolate Touch is a nice touch screen phone that doesn't require a data plan.

Where will 90%+ of your usage be? I think if you told us, someone in the same area can set a reasonable expectation for you.

Yeah, you really do need to ask people in the area where you will be using it. But keep in mind the bars mean nothing as far as Verizon is concerned. I don't even look at them, really, because I can't recall NOT having service. I also don't drop calls. I know AT&T people don't believe that, but honestly, where I live, I simply don't drop calls. As for touch, the Droid is really a nice phone.

i just need to know if on verizon phones the signal goes up and down sporadically or erratically cause here in new york thats what happens on att phones.

No, I have not noticed this on my phone at all. It may go from 4 bars to 3 bars then back to 4 bars, but nothing like 4 to 0 then back to 4 then to 2 then 1 then 4. (4 Bars is full service on Verizon btw).

CDMA 2G is the finest voice technology ever deployed commercially, anywhere on earth. All things being equal,VZW voice transmission will trump AT&T every time- but all things are rarely equal.
While GSM 3G is (in a test-tube environment) a superior technology compared to CDMA 3G, AT&T's implementation of GSM 3G as a voice AND data network, combined with a ridiculous over-burdening of inefficient iPhones on the network has pretty much doomed the technology in major metropolitan areas. On AT&T, voice and data use the same spectrum, so all the folks walking around streaming Pandora 16 hours a day are causing all the "regular" users to drop calls left and right, because AT&T can't manage and prioritize the network traffic effectively.
