Quota and Comission Structure

VZW Sales Mgr

Nov 5, 2009, 9:35 AM
I have been in the wireless industry for many years and have been a sales mgr for a cpl different agents and even worked for corporate at one point in time.
I took some time off from the business and I have now accepted a sales mgr position with a small Vzw agent.
I am looking to change the current commission structure that is in place as well as hold the reps to a quota(yes they have not had quotas in the past)
I am just looking to see what different type of structures are out there and what the reps think of each. Obviously, I really dont care where you work, I'm just interested in how you get paid and what your daily, weekly and monthly goals are.
Thanks for your help

I've been out of the game for a long time, but still have some friends in it. The best plan I've ever seen from an agent is a set amount for each acto, a set amount for each qualified upgrade, and a set percentage on the accessory sales with a bonus for exceeding quota. The example that I'm using paid 20% on accessories and if you exceeded $2,500 in accessory sales, that went to 30%.

I'm not sure what the quotas are these days. Last I checked it was 40 per month per rep at a fairly slow reseller. That 40 per month was adjusted higher for November and December.

Wow... 40 a month per rep! That must be nice! LOL We're lucky to get 20 a month for the whole store.

I wouldn't call that slow by any means. We have 1 activation for the month so far. I'd be in heaven to have that many activations.

i alone have 5. but seriously, we're slow. you just have to make sure that you're taking advantage of every customer taht comes through the door, so i do a lot of "account reviews". which means i get their account info to look for upgrades. i talk to people about their kids, and if they have phones. and i get add on's all the time. 😎

My company works off of pure Gross Profit, meaning that we get paid on what is activated. This sucks for the customers who have a 9.99 basic and want an envtouch, but it is great when you can show customers why they want date.

It makes reps a lot more concious of the cost of the devices, and makes them work harder to get a customer into a device that matches their usage (thus minimizing returns and people taking up hours "learning" a device too advanced for them). we used to be on the set ammount for new acts/upgrades, but we found that employees were just putting everyone in high end touch screen phones, and then spending hours showing them the same stuff over and over again.

We don't have quota's per say, but there are minimum goal...

Wow that sounds very similar to way things are here now! I'm not really sure that I like it. If I am held responsibile for the store profit and paid based on a quota isn't it only fair that my reps are as well?

What are the minimum goals you are expected to hit?

40 new acts, 60 up (gonna be 60/60 soon) DAPC is important, as is addon like ACC, protection, etc.

our reps are all off of GP, so they are held to same standards.

It depends on store traffic. You can't expect them to hit quotas if there isn't the right amount of traffic to meet them. I'm not sure what you're store is like or the size of the area you're in and I know that makes a big difference. Obviously if you're store is getting 100 acts a month and you have 4 reps you can't expect them each to do 50 a month, I doubt it would be possible.

"It depends on store traffic..."

Agreed. That said, if you're getting 100 activations in a month with 4 reps, it wouldn't be unreasonable to make the quota 30 per rep. You'd be amazed where reps can find activations when motivated by a quota with bonus program.

"Need" is a very broad term. When I was in the industry people were adding lines for their 10 year olds and I'm sure this trend continues. How many 10 year olds "need" that cell phone?

That wasn't my point. Friends of friends, referrals from existing customers, there are so many places for reps to get more activations.

Our structure is based off a team commission. That way we each get x% of each sale whether we sell it or not so we work as a team. My store does 100-200 boxes a month and our accessory goal is 150% (3 accessories for every 2 phones) It has been really successful for us. Our individual goals usually are 15 new 30 up per employee
