Is CDMA dying now that Verizon said they going with a form of GSM

Now that Verizon has official said they are changing to GSM for their 4G technology, what does that mean for Sprint?
Three of the four national's will be on the same platform..
Also, what does that mean to all the verizon CDMA slappies that for years have sipped the kool-aid and told us how great that technology is. Are these same people gonna flip-flop in a few years? just a thought.

We have talked about this extensively. I just wanted to point out that LTE is linked with HSPA but uses more OFDM/A and some CDMA infrastructure. This does not mean that Verizon is going away from CDMA, but it means that they wanted to team up with Voda to do a global standard across their assets.

Sprint is doing Wimax.

If companies see that these 4g+ technologies are better than their CDMA networks then they will probably make the switch but it would take many years constructing the network and then moving the customers over.

So once this eventually happens would that mean that all verizon phones would have sim cards???

I cannot say all but probably some or most. Some of their phones especially the global Blackberry, I believe, has a sim card in it.

Well the 8830 takes a sim and comes with one if you ask for the global support pack. I was mostly talking about if all lte phones would have them..

Oh, ok so you were talking about overall. I would again have to say a majority will have them, but it will take time to move people over from their CDMA operations to the LTE one. If they move everyone over, which is highly unlikely, then yes, they should probably all have a Sim card, but they need to go away from the CDMA network. They could also have dual CDMA/LTE but I think that is difficult on a number of levels, however, can still be done.

So short answer; yes probably it will but take some time.

I wonder what those hybrid phones would be called. I remember the TDMA/GSM phones being referred to as GAIT, and those phones from what I heard didn't work as well switching between net...

No idea. Voda and VZ should probably come up with some names that will be showing how LTE performs. Could be speed, capacity, and powerful. That’s what I would do.

Having dual mode phones is not that easy to release and have being launched onto the network. It will be difficult but it can happen, especially as the years progress.

Verizon is well known for having the best call quality in the US. Will a move to GSM make Verizon's call quality simiar to At&t's?

It is not exactly GSM. Please stop saying that. It uses more CDMA infrastructure than GSM. Moreover, it uses more OFDM/A then GSM and CDMA combined.

Forgot to mention but OFDM/A actually is better on the spectrum efficiency side and capacity side than CDMA and GSM.

So, Verizon's call quality will become more clear with OFDM/A?

Given the nature of how OFDM/A works it should. Will it? Depending on how Verizon uses their spectrum and infrastructure.

There will be absolutely no GSM involved. LTE is a *new* technology that has different characteristics than both GSM and CDMA, especially when it comes to issues like call quality. I'm not saying it will be better or worse in practice, but rather, it's a different enough technology that nearly anything you know (or think you know) about GSM would simply not apply to LTE.

Is there a way we can or you can address the forum members about this whole LTE situation and its affiliation or lack thereof with GSM? Members seem to continue to be confused especially in this forum, in the AT&T forum, and in the news section, about the characteristics and differences between GSM and LTE.

Rich, are there any cell phone companies currently using LTE?

I am not Rich but there are no commercialized LTE networks as of right now (That I know of). I am not sure if Rich has other information. Currently, they are just doing trials and testing. Commercialized launch, if I remember correctly, will not commence until at least 2009 maybe 2010. NTT I believe is the closest at actually having such type network launched but they are still trailing and testing.

ntt is very close. Softbank too from what I hear here. And AU not sure they are on CDMA here in Japan. The other two use WCDMA for both voice and data!

Yes, I know. Should be interesting with all of the data speeds how well companies will do. Overseas they will do very well, but in this country, not quite sure yet. NTT is a very good company and by their trials, they are very happy. Problem is, Japan is a very saturated market but the good thing is, most of it is voice so that makes NTT able to expand their data services. I hope they expand in a lot more places than they are in now with more services. Perhaps buying some telecommunications companies might help. I do like them though.

I did a report on them for one of my many finance classes.
