According to the map online and at stores the phone only works in the blue areas and the grey areas are no service at all, not even roaming. Ampd cust serv claims anywhere in the country, not just the blue areas you will get service and no charge. which is true

Amp'd uses the Verizon Wireless CDMA network for their coverage area. Even though Verizon Wireless still has analog/AMPS areas in the country, all 3 handsets of Amp'd are dual band CDMA which means in essence if you go somewhere that's analog, you won't have any coverage. With Amp'd being an MNVO, I'm not sure what intercarrier roaming agreements they have with other CDMA wireless carriers like Alltel or Sprint Nextel Inc. at this time.

Thanks for the info however in the digital areas that arent ev-do we voice still work, according to verizon, 95% of their coverage is digital, so will ampd work or does it only pick up verizon towers in major areas?

I noticed if you put zip codes for some areas that are gray into the Amp'd website it will state there is coverage but other areas it indicates there is no coverage. It is very confusing and it would help if someone from Amp'd could clarify.

The reason that Amp'd customer service has verizon maps is because Amp'd is on Verizons network. You get the same coverage as you would with a Verizon phone that is only digital.

Amp'd phones are all only digital, NO ANALOG, where some of verizons phones still have the ability to go back and forth between digital and analog. The only advantage to having a phone that goes to analog when needed is for the few places that digital is not available. Verizon is moving towards more digital areas, so rest assured that in the future all the areas covered by verizon analog will be digital.

PS, I looked at the verizon coverage map and the amp'd coverage map, they are both the same.

You are covered in the gray area. They gray area just means that they have no EVDO coverage there, they only have the 1X coverage there. That only means that when you are not in a blue area you will not have high speed internet on your phone. You will have there older data speeds on 1X. You can still send PIX, FLIX, And text messages in the grey area and make calls. They only thing bad about that is that The PIX and FlIX messging system takes longer to send they picture or video than if you were in they EVDO area

So many replies, I will not read them all and just add my own:

AMPD uses the same as verizon which is the largest and best coverage there is.

they also provide free roaming in the non coverage areas so they are just the best!

and you get that great verizon coverage for a much better price with ampd!
