If I was was to purchase a nextel phone and wanted to use it on boost, would it have to be unlocked or could I just put a boost prepaid starter kit in it? Or would I be better off just buying a boost phone with sim?

Just to let you know I was thinking about the i730 😉

Lioness...Go for it! I think the i730 is the best phone available for both Nextel and Boost. I have not seen the 836 or 850 in use yet but the 730 is both durable and the features are very easy to use, I'm not a huge fan of the 860 or the 830 but if your looking for a handset that is in common use the 730 is the best.
As far as being locked or umlocked it kinda depends on where the handset was used..if it is not a domestic carrier you may have some issues but if it is just a regular Nextel it will work fine.
All you need is the Starter Kit and I can suggest a few locations for those if you need it...Jess

Thanks jessthemess...I think I will. I was thinking of buying one from ebay and also buy the sim kit from there as well. What do you suggest?

My first purchase of a SIM card off of E-bay was maddening ...When I learned I overpaid by 30% I was not happy!
I have also purchased a couple of phones (i90's) from different sellers and I was not happy with the quality and the shipping method was overpriced and in my opinion fraudulent. They charged me a hidden insurance cost as a tack on and the package came stuffed in a bag and taped up with Duct Tape...I would only suggest E-Bay as a third or fourth choice, and that is base on only MY experience.

The professionalism, quality, and choices are stand out.
Other than this site I would advise going with the best price for the highest level of service and that would be Nextel retai...

I honestly cannot tell you the bottom line on "locked" versus "un-locked" phones...I can honestly say that I have never had any problems with activation or being able to use the service on ANY nextel handset....if it is a Lost/stolen handset, the activation will pop up an error that will not allow me to use THAT equipment serial number...but if the customer has a secondary IMEI # I can punch into the activation field I can activate the SIM card and that is all we really do.....activate the SIM card. You can put that sim into a compatable handset and if there are not any physical problems with the equipment you can use any Nextel or Boost handset.
As far as I know the only handset that will be locked is a Motorola that is usable on the iDen...
