Purchasing a New Phone

My current phone is old and it's time for a new one. I was thinking about purchasing a new phone on ebay since I am a college student and cannot afford the prices the retail store wants to charge me for a new phone. My current carrier is Cellular One/Dobson in PA.

I initially e-mailed Cellular One, of course they recommend that I purchase a phone from their retail store (aka no help). I noticed a lot of phones were "unlocked" on ebay, am I able to use one of these with Dobson Cellular One? Some mentioned a SIM Card, are these available and where would I find one for Cellular One Dobson?

I'm really clueless when it comes to purchasing a phone on ebay and the specifics I need 😕 . I just need someone to guide me..
If anyone can offe...

Hello,
I work for a CellOne dealer in PA, perhaps I can help? I know that if you have had your phone for 18 months, you can get a new one for free if you sign a new 2-year agreement. The SIM card you refer to is a chip inserted into our new GSM phones, and it is free with the purchase of a phone from Cell One or the dealership I work for, Freedom Wireless. If you post what plan you have now and the phone model also, I may be able to help you further.

I read your message and thought I would respond since I work at the Corporate Office for Cellular One/Dobson Communications.

The main problem with buying a handset off of e-bay is that it may not be configured correctly for our system. Each carrier has certain criteria that their phones have to meet in order to be authorized on their systems. Ours at Cellular One/Dobson Communications is very stringent. We have spent millions of dollars on upgrading our system to GSM as well as testing our equipment. We also spend numerous man hours testing our approved handsets so that our customers get the best coverage available while they are on our home network. We do not carry handsets unless they meet ALL of our guidelines.

It is not the ot...

what is a customer to do, other than buy an unlocked phone, when the only available carrier [Cellular One] doesn not sell the phone you need? I need a smart phone with a key board for e-mail and our company does not support blackberry. Cellular One does not offer a phone with a MS mobile OS or any of the newer top smart phones. I think, rather than scaring people with problems from buying an unlocked phone; you should invite customers to come in with unlocked phones and you will help then set up the phone correctly. You will end up with more loyal customers, with less turnover because of the unique customer service you provide. Carriers have to start selling something other that just a phone plan...lots of carriers offer phone plans. Ca...

There are really only 2 things to look for. The phone needs to be unlocked and it needs to run on the 850 MHz frequency. Nealry all T-Mobile phones will not work as they work on 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz frequencies. Several ATT wireless phones will not work either for the same reason, like the 3650. If it works on 850 and its unlocked a rep who knows the WAP and MMS info can manually put the settings in for you. I will say the best policy is to buy one from us (I work for Dobson/ cell one)
