Tell me about Cellular one

They are offering a GSM Nation wide plan and I want to make sure it isn't too good to be true. CellOne has a non compete agreement in my area with the other GSM service providers, so ATT and Cingular aren't an option. Cell One assures me I will NOT incur roaming charges whether the tower picking up the signal is Dobson, Cing or ATT. Is this true? I travel a great deal and can't afford to unknowingly incur roaming charges.

Other than that, how is the service in general?

Hmmm...first I've heard of Dobson/CellularOne having a noncompete with Cingular. Where are you located? Zip code is fine.

Hmmm... looks like that's in error. We have coverage there, and are slated to roll out more towers in July of next year.

If you have coverage there, then why can't we subscribe to Cingular? I've been researching this since Cingular rolled out. We can't get Cingular accounts, neither can we get ATT accounts in that area.

Periodically I go to the website, and every time I put in any zip codes in Dutchess County the reply is always the same 'not in our database'. It's been the same response with ATT for four years. Cingular and ATT don't have any local stores in our area that I can find.

Forgot to mention that I have also e-mailed Cingular customer service and they told me they have no intention of allowing accounts from Dutchess County in the near future. That was about three months ago.

Strange. Wondering if that might not change post-buyout. Seems strange that we have native coverage there that we can't use, unless its restricted for roaming only.

Just because a carrier has coverage in a particular market doesn't mean that they provide service in that area. some local and national regulations prevent carriers from monopolizing certain areas or providing service in those areas at all.

You can get Cingular service in 12601. It has always been an area of service for the last three years. Non-compete clauses prevent the carrier from having a network running in that area. If you need more information, re...
