Blackberry data vs signalink data

I had finally convinced myself, that I wanted a blackberry pearl. I was even able to price out a plan that was reasonable. However, I priced out the plan using the signalink data plan instead of the blackberry data plan. After talking to the local store (who contacted tier 2), I was told that I must have the blackberry data plan, if i had a blackberry phone. Can somebody explain to me why I can't access the internet/email with a blackberry using the signalink plan? I understand that the blackberry plan has BES stuff, but I mostly need to phone to run custom applications for connecting/monitoring networks.

Reason you can't use the Signalink package is because the Signalink access point will not work on a Blackberry. Our network is designed to house the Blackberry devices strictly to one access point which is relegated only to Blackberry devices. If they called a Tier-2 rep, it was probably a mofo like me that answered. Does this answer your question?

I think I follow... Technically the blackberry AP should provide a faster connection then (assuming that fewer people have blackberries). Do all sites have this special AP? Is there any chance that I could have voice service, but not have the data service?
Thank you.

You can have voice only service on the Blackberry device, but the MMS and internet is still dependent upon the Blackberry APN being provisioned on the line unfortunately. As far as it being faster, some speeds have been know to reach up to 230K. I know that's what I peaked out at when I tethered the Pearl to my desktop as a modem.
