Thinking about switching.

I've had verizon for four years now. The service is great, but the company had kind of f**ked me over regarding upgrades (besides that, they are always rude to me). So after visiting my local verizon retailer today and getting the run around, I decided to look at my cell phone carrier options, and I went into the new cricket store. Everything sounded pretty nice, the big $50 unlimited everything (almost) was appealing because it's cheaper than my current bill. But. I decided to look into this because I am not familiar with smaller cell phone companies and I've heard mixed reviews. So, let me just explain what my lifestyle is like and maybe someone who is familiar with cricket can give me some advice.

I live in the Vancouver, WA/ Por...

1) If you're in your local calling area the service works just fine. If you get around the borders of your local calling area, it may be hit or miss.

2) Once you step outside your local calling area your phone will just cease to work. Which is where the travel time service comes in. Travel time starts at $5 for 30 minutes. You have to add this to your plan first, Cricket will never automatically put something on your bill you did not request.

3) Depends, the $50 plan includes unlimited mobile web (internet) access and allows you to use your phone in ANY cricket calling area. So if you know you do a lot of traveling to an area that has cricket service, it's worth it. Keep in mind unlimited mobile web doesn't = unlimited download of rin...

Really? Cricket sucked when I had it, along with the customer service. Verizon has the best call quality. I lost SO MANY calls with Cricket. If it works for you, then it works for you.

how do you know they have the best call quality were he lives? So you live there also and tried all the services in that area? Just don't like blanket statements with little data backing it up!

Doesn't matter, what phone and where. The service all over PDX is horrible and continuously dropped calls or unable to complete a call even in a service area.

I don't think your opinion can be changed, but for the benefit of those doing research on Cricket in the Portland market (as I was trying to do) here we go:

1) All phones little innards are different, so that will affect call quality.

2) If a phone's antenna and ear piece are of a bad quality talking on even the best network would be affected.

3) Every carrier is going to have tons of variations throughout its network, even in one market. Of course the location of towers will affect things, but so will YOUR location. It is possible for people within only a few blocks of each other to have completely different coverage experiences with a certain carrier.

4) Geographical features like hills and mountains can affect service (...

In another thread you stated that you knew several people who had the service and they liked it. Go by that! Or are you going to take the advice of someone on a website who could possibly live Miami. If you know several people who have the service ask them to make a few calls. They shouldn't care the have unlimited minutes. Then you decide for yourself. Hell go get a phone you get the first month free, no contract. If you don't like it sell the phone to someone looking to get service. Also it is a new market for us so please understand and please give us a chance to get the entire network up.

Nope, I don't live in Miami. I live and work in PDX. I also know some folks with Cricket (or at least they HAD Cricket) and I could NEVER get a hold of them. I would call them over and over and either get a message saying they had left the coverage area or it would go directly to voicemail. After a dozen or so calls I would finally get them and ask them where they had been. Turns out they were at work or sitting in their living room the WHOLE time. 🤣 Go with a real carrier, remember, you get what you pay for. 😉

junglemassive i don't care where you live. I was pretty confident you didn't live in Miami. All I was saying is don't trust the word of someone on the internet. Make some test calls for yourself and you decide. Hell I've had the same situation with other carriers. If someone told you that car xyz got 300 miles to the gallon would you just run right out and buy one. Or would you do a little research and maybe test drive one. You are also comparing a company that has had service in your area for how long to a company that has only provided service in your area for less than six months. You can talk all the crap you want now but you will be eating it later. At least I hope! From the inside their direction and game plan look VERY good!...
