Do AT&T phones need to be unlocked?

Wow, it's been forever since I've been on PhoneScoop. I'm impressed I remembered my login and password.

I'm strongly considering switching to Cricket after my Verizon contract is up in December, since I hear that people with AT&T have good service in my area. (That I moved to after entering a contract with Verizon) With the iPhone 6 coming out, I'm guessing there will be a glut of used iPhone 5/c/s to buy private party.

Does anyone know if phones (and iPhones specifically) that are still locked on AT&T will work with Cricket? Since I've never used a carrier other than Verizon, I'm also wondering, would AT&T unlock a phone I bought private party if I'd prefer to use it on Cricket?

AT&T branded phones can be used on Cricket without needing to unlock them first.

1. Make sure the phone isn't stolen
2. Make sure the phone wasn't financed. If it was, make sure the balance due is 0.
