I am a long time Cingular subscriber, but do to a current issue I have with them I am considering switching to US. I like their current special of free incoming calls. Anyway, you all are users tell me what you think. Would I be happy with them for the life of the two year contract and what phone would hold up the best for the two years?
Thanks!

I've had U.S. Cellular for just under a year and have had nothing but the best of luck with them. I had sprint before that and couldn't get signal to save my life. The free incomming calls is great as well. Most usefull promo I've seen in a long time.

I have been with them for 7 years, through Analog, TDMA, and now CDMA. Service is awesome as far as I am concerned, and prices are noticeably lower than, say, Verizon, which also operates in my market (southern NH).

I seldom see or hear of complaints from USC customers in Northern New England (ME, NH, VT) but there are some complainers out there, mainly they seem to be in Chicagoland, with another group spread over the midwest. Not sure why their experience is worse than ours here in New England, but it's true that just about every complaint about USC that I come across is from a mid-westerner.

My suggestion would be to take advantage of their new 30-day trial period and fully test reception and quality in the places you go most of...

That is true that most of the complaints comming from the midwest, mine being one of them. Back when I got the VX6000 last year it performed well, geting service in most urban areas and what not but once I got out where I live (Olin) about 30 miles east of Cedar Rapids I couldn't get signal at all. If I leave town north of 38 a few miles and get closer to the US Cellular tower about 7 miles outside of town then I was okay, not anymore though, I can sit on a hill about 3 miles from the tower and still drop calls. Can't wait till this fall when the contract ends to get a new phone, hopefully the nokia camera phone is out by then.

Also another problem with USC is that they fail to place their towers logicaly out in rural areas, such as th...

Not sure if you knew but the LG 6000 is a Digital CDMA only phone. It won't work on a analog tower. Didn't know if you had that kind of coverage where you lived or not.

As for the 5550, it's a really good phone. Tri-mode and the speaker feature is the best I've ever seen.

I agree with waywith- definitely get an LG. Either the LX5550 if you want no camera but a kickass speakerphone, or the VX6000 if you want a camera. Otherwise the 6585 will be out later this month.

Really, it all depends on where you live with any company, but it is definately worth checking out with the 30 day trial. Living in WI I had USCC for the past 7 years. They definately dominate the market up there and have the best signal around, even in small little communities that noone else can touch.

However, as pointed out, Chicagoland is another story. I get pretty good coverage at my house and the surrounding area but definately have had some trouble spots where everyone else seems to get it.

The fact remains though that noone can really touch their rates. If you are a local area customer who wants a ton of minutes for low cost, then you shouldn't hold back. Try it out and decide for yourself.

Thought I'd point out to you bjoyen that you said no one else is able to touch their rates, actualy most of the pressure for them to keep lowering their rates is from other local companies around the midwest here such as in Iowa as Midwest Wireless and Alltel. Midwest Wireless I know for a fact started running the 1000 for 39.95 about 3 weeks before USC did.

US Cellular has the highest retention rate in the country- so basically we have the lowest percentage of customers switching from us. I'd say that's worth a contract

Yup, the reception in chicagoland does really suck. I know of someone with U.S. Cellular who can never get reception almost anywhere that she goes. She can't get reception in her house or where she works at. And she always gets dropped calls. She can't wait for the contract to be over with. U.S. Cellular is prob the worse cell phone company in the chicagoland area. People are always switching from U.S. Cellular to another company out here in the midwest. But then again, really depends where you live. That's just my story on the crappy service they provide in chicagoland. Hopefully, they'll do some expanding or else they'll just continue to lose customers out here.

I'm going to chicago to pick up a friend on the 20th so I'll do a little testing of how well USC works there...then again my phone gets really bad service to begin with so it'll be a learning experience! 🙄

the problem with the Chicago area with USCC is that they bought PrimeCo's crappy network 2 years ago, and that's what they're using. Hopefully they get their butts in gear and start improving it some more! My phone has always worked fine in Chicago but I know plenty of people whose phones get very poor reception there

🙂 we are working to improve the network, and as it stands, those with a trimode are better off, especially if they have the correct preferred roaming list on the phone. i see the most troubles with the dual modes only, the lgs and motos are great for the most part.
