MisD.O. the D.O. ???

People would generally agree that the D.O. has good principles. But for those who are USCC employees or ex employees, do you feel like the D.O. is sometimes misapplied to punish, control, or brainwash associates? I have no opinion either way but am curious to see how you feel on this.

While i believe the ideals behind the D.O. are amazing and think every company should adopt them i think a lot of times they just become the go to answer for why changes occur or decisions are made. It's used as an easy out to answer the "why did they do that" questions. rather then actually living it we are just told that its because of the D.O.. I don't know if it's used so much to brainwash people but more to hide the true workings and ideals of the company.

@thatcellguy - you should check out again what the D.O is all about. What are our values? Ethics for example. US Cellular was rated among the most ethical companies in the US. Everyone know right from wrong. Wrong is not acceptable.
Customer Focus - we don't exist without customers. Respect - name one person who does not want to be respected. etc etc. It is common sense, yes, however too many people ignore common sense and look out only for themselves. The D.O. mirrors the values my parents instilled in me. And I am very proud to work for a company that has the values I missed in other companies I worked for.


@yourvoiceofreason - thanks for asking the question. And no - I don't feel brainwashed... unless my parents brainwashed me as ...

Personally I haven't heard as much about the DO as from the prior CEO. I'm not complaining either. It was to the point of indoctrination. It was almost scary. You would hand someone a piece a paper and that person would recite "way to show respect." While that's nice and all, a simple "thank you" would have sufficed. It was like nobody had their own original thoughts, just reciting code words and phrases. I really don't know what the new CEO has in store. Her silence might speak volumes. I think she might be more concerned about the bottom line than the culture. Who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if more customer service type jobs gets outsourced to save money/benefits. We'll have to wait and see. Only time will tell.

D.O. is the abbreviation for Dynamic Organization. However what is discussed are the values of the D.O. which is what I addressed before.
So your opinion would have to be based on the question if you believe values like 'ethics', 'customer focus', 'respect', 'diversity', 'pride', 'empowerment' are good values or not.
Some contributors in phonescoop clearly do not, e.g. there are people contributing company internal confidential information in phonescoop, which could endanger not only their own jobs, but also the well-being of the company..., including all other employees of that company. Since they signed the Business Code of Conduct in our case, in which they promise not to do that, they act unethically, they do not respect the company'...

That isn't the Party Line of every company that I have ever worked for.

How does stating that you're for these things distinguish you from every other corporation in the United States?

@ This Troper: That is what I thought when I joined US Cellular. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that we actually live up to those values and they are part of the performance process.
I am no spring chicken and there is not one company I worked for that was this serious about the values. You can be awesome at performing tasks, if you don't live up to the values, you might still look for another job.
Also notice, US Cellular is rated as one of the most ethical companies in the US.

before misses "I am loving it" just wait a year and see everything change. you probably get paid salary so you are not affected but us we are. put yourself in one's shoes before giving your biased opinion.

You are confusing pay with values.
We are not discussing who gets paid what in this thread - there is another one going on about that topic.
But if you consider payroll a value, don't forget the benefits you are receiving. I never worked for another company that paid healthcare from day 1 on the job - including if people are part time - or pay into 401K from day 1, for full or part time employees. And that is only a tiny part of all the benefits we enjoy.
Nobody says everything is honey, but you can certainly make it all about things you don't like. I prefer looking at the positive side. First of all, I do have a job. I don't live above my means, so I can pay my bills, etc etc.

Just to be clear, I'll re-state my question to see if it makes more sense to people:

The D.O. at USCC has great values in themselves, as stated by others. But if you are a USCC employee or ex-employee, do you feel like these values are ever misapplied by the company, in order to brainwash you to think a certain way, or management misapplying the application of the values, in order to get rid of who they dont like?

You have to be a USCC employee or ex-employee to really answer this, since it isnt so much about the values themselves, but how USCC uses these.

The reason I ask is that many companies have their core values, but many times bad management will misapply the application of these values in a particular situation, in efforts ...

Yes. It happens daily by at least 50% of all USCC managers.

The DO is simply a method of control. Leaders hide behind it and associates lap it up or fear it. Can some explain to me where the term "undynamic" came from??

I have not experienced this, but that doesn't mean it does not happen. I doubt I'm the exception but I've had great experiences with every leader I've met. Had them coach me and try to develop me. I feel the feedback I've been given is fair (if I look at myself honestly) and for my benefit.

To put it another way, when I describe why I love my job to others I tell them of this same thing you are asking about. At least in my experience the values and behaviors are followed and not just writing on a wall in the break room.

It is an odd place to work with a huge instance on learning the company rhetoric. For example, leaders. We are strongly discouraged from reffering to Sales Managers, Store Managers, etc by their title. Instead they are always leaders...

Not every manager is a bad one, but the company insists on an absurd level of rhetoric to create an enviornment where we are not encouraged to think for ourselves. The recent conversations around employee commission changes is a great example this.
