US Cellular: Next In Line For Telecom Takeover?
Ruthie Ackerman,

Guess who’s calling?

With a slew of telecom takeover activity recently--Alltel (nyse: AT - news - people )’s $24.7 billion buyout by two private investor groups that was approved by 97% of shareholders in a vote on Wednesday, Verizon (nyse: VZ - news - people )’s $757 million acquisition of Rural Cellular (nasdaq: RCCC - news - people ), and AT&T (nyse: T - news - people )â€...

Old news, they should either sell or get serious. They will always be #6.They should concentrate on being the best "#6" that they can be.They don't need to worry about trying to compete with at&t because they will never be able to compete with The Big Boys.I hear people bitch about US, but I think they provide a solid service.

I agree, the function and are profitable and they pay me a lot of money to help them sell phones, so I won't complain. but the people that do complain need to try another carrier and then come running back with your tail between your legs to uscc because you know their service is the cheapest and the best network coverage........... www.telaphia.com indepent network testing........ATT isn't number one in the markets they share with uscc. uscc is.......cry att cry

Thanks for reading and replying. I tell you I agree with the plain and simple "fact" that USCC has GREAT customer service, GREAT network coverage (which seems to be getting better all the time) and good pricing. I have compared what I pay for 4 lines for my family to people using other companies who pay for 2 lines and they pay more.
I do think that USCC should work on being the BEST "#6" company out there, therefore they will become a hot commodity and, at the same time, NOT sell-out.
I don’t think we have anything to worry about but some schmooze came up to me the other day at work and noticed I had a Moto-Q and asked me who my service provider was; I told him and it seemed like his ears perked up and he proceeded to tell me the fo...

There is absolutely no plan to ever sell U.S. Cellular. Here's the thing. U.S. Cellular started in 1983 and among all the companies that have been around that long is the only one that hasn't changed its name (other than from United States Cellular to U.S. Cellular to make it easier) or to be bought. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint/Nextel - the "big three" - are nothing more than acquisition after acquisition...no wonder Sprint lost 357 THOUSAND customers last quarter.

They are owned (majority) by a family in WI. Started out as Wisconsin Telephone Company. I'm sure everyone has heard of TDS. This is what WTC became. TDS is majority owner of uscc. I believe somewhere around 80%, but not positive. Overall, a great "little" company. They should change the name back to "United States Cellular." lol I'm sure everyone would love to say that 50 times a day.

If you think that US Cellular may never sell. I think you are in a dream world. US Cellular is having a lot of problems in the Metro areas that they are operating in including St Louis, Chicago, and Oklahoma City. They have thrown the brakes on in the new territories that they have been planning on opening up in for years. USCC has never had to deal with all of the major carriers in their rural piggy banks. Plus USCC is the only small company that is up for grabs. Jack and Jay will retire someday. You need to wake up and smell the coffee! You've been sold a dream.

Chicago is not struggling, Oklahoma City is starting to pick up. St. Louis is problematic. The brakes are being put on to make sure the current markets reach good penetration before moving forward. The company is making great strides in terms of data, new phone release, and we have seen tremendous growth in my own market here in Indiana in the last two years. What I think you aren't understanding is the mission of the company. It is not to be the biggest, it is to be the best. If you can tell me which other big company has the customer service US Cellular does, I would be all ears. I have had every single one, and we have had a lot of customers get lured by the phones only to come back in less than 6 months because they hate their ser...

I have used both USCC and verizon, and I would say I have had better customer service with verizon. I would also say both companies have good customer service. To say USCC has the best customer service is wrong, I know, I have dealt with both.

i have had verizon, centennial, sprint, t-mobile, at&t and cingular (when they were separate and after cingular acquired at&t, but before the at&t repurchase). us cellular was the only company i decided i'd be willing to work with because of the way they do business. what were the problems you experienced w/ customer service from us cellular and what was it that you liked with verizon?

Like I said, both companies in my mind have good customer service. I would not tell anyone not to use either service because of bad customer service.

The biggest deal I had with USCC is over the 50% rule. They were trying to get me to downgrade my plan because customer service over the years gave me promos that were not suppose to offered on the same plan together. 3 months after re-signing a 2 year contract which stated retention fo services, USCC tried to force me to change my plan. I refused to do so. The rep was a little rude after I told her that I did not want to change my plan. She said I had to. It went on for 20 or 30 minutes of discussing this issue. I told her that I signed a 2 year contract for this plan, she said no...

The phantom "50/50 Rule" mentioned in this thread is interesting...It does exist in some ways but not like it truly used to. The reason for it is due to Preferred Roaming Agreements.

This is not company confidential..so I will disclose...We have preferred roaming agreements with multiple "big" CDMA carriers. We eat the costs of our customers roaming with said providers and to keep out nationwide plans from collapsing inwards, we must put some sort of limitation on usage patterns for these travelers. As I said, with the new PRA's this has been pretty minimal.

I'm not sure what your idea of good cs is but last time I visited a corporate vz store I was told that I had to sign in at the touch screen podium to "sign up" so I could talk to a sales rep and they had a line out the door for the billing person and a big line for the repair people. From what I have been told by other people that I know that have there service this a very typical scene. In my book thats not good cs at least uscc uses live graeters to handle that task!
