no roaming service in atlanta with nokia 6255i
Yesterday I was passing thru Atlanta Hartsfield airport and my phone was set to "Automatic Roaming" rather than MetroPCS only. The Nokia 6255i determined that there was a MetroPCS service site available and synced with it. Lo and behold when I tried to make a call it was disconnected 2 seconds after I pressed SEND.
It seems that if you are out of your home coverage area (Atlanta/Athens, San Francisco/Sacramento, South Florida) and in another MetroPCS area, your phone will NOT work even when attempting roaming.

I noticed that MetroPCS service is now available in the Tampa/St. Petersburg/Sarasota market now. Coverage (at least depicted by their map) is from Brooksville south all the way to Marco Island now. About 227 miles of continuous coverage. On the east coast the coverage is from Sebastian to Key West, about 312 miles of continuous coverage.
I don't know how much you travel out of your local area. But your best bet is to put something like Alltel pre-pay on NAM2, and your Metro service stays on NAM1. When you travel, just switch to NAM2 and you will have service outside of that area(on a different mobile number of course).
