Drove from Boca Raton to Land O' Lakes via I-75 (thru Tampa) on 1 September 2005. Coverage was fine until just north of Port Charlotte. "No Service Available" was the screen display on the Nokia 6255i the rest of the way. Even in Tampa itself there was no service.
MetroPCS is opening their Tampa, Sarasota, St. Petersburg stores on 15 September. I gather that service will start then or sooner. Tomorrow I'm driving back to Fort Lauderdale thru Tampa, will see if service has commenced by then.
