Thinking of switching to Metro PCS...

I currently have a MOTO RAZR with T-Mobile. If I unlock it, will it work with Metro PCS? I didn't think it would since it's GSM vs. CDMA, but I was looking on auctions on Ebay and they said it would. (I've never had an unlocked phone so I'm confused) Also, if I purchase a CDMA unlocked phone, will it work with Metro PCS (say, if it was a Verizon Wireless phone?) Other than the RAZR, I don't really like the phones Metro PCS offers and would rather get a used one from someone than pay full price with them. Thanks for the help!!

It amazes me someone writing on eBay for their item saying "an unlocked GSM phone will work on MetroPCS's CDMA network". I think you misread the information on the bidded item, or the seller is totally out-to-lunch when knowing his product. Perhaps his desire of getting it out the door overrides his sense of truthfulness.

Back to your question. No, no, and no. All MetroPCS branded phones (those with ESNs assigned to MetroPCS) can be activated with MetroPCS service. But before being too hasty and bidding on a MetroPCS deal-of-century phone on eBay, get the ESN from the seller and verify that there is not a "hold" due to previous use.

All the discussion that you might have read (heard, inferred, discussed, rumored, etc) about "unlocked" ...

Any cdma non metro phone just would not have the firmware or prl to make it work on our network.

You also have to keep this in mind...
when you purchase a brand new phone you get first month services and activation free, when you bring in a used phone you have to pay a $15 reactivation fee plus your first month in advance.

In the end your best to just shell out the money and get a new phone. Also remember the prices are high because theres no contract to subsidize the cost of the phone and no $35 activation that sneaks its way onto to your tab.

If you allready have a metro Pcs activated phone and need a new phone you have to pay full price for the phone and you dont get the next mounth free . Thats not wright they will give you the free mounth but only if you get a new number Metro pcs only cares about getting new business not in keeping .

Actually no you don't have to pay full price. If you already have a phone and you want to get a new phone, you can the option to trade it in for 30$ or 15$ credit depending on how old the phone is.Also you don't need a new number to get another first month free. You can request to have them reset your billing date to the date you will be purchasing the new phone, which gives you an entire month free once again.I've done this before so i know it will work.

only phones that are designed to work with Metro PCS will work with Metro PCS, you might consider the razr if you have 300 dollars for it, it might be good, another phone that might be good(i admit their line up sucks) would be the Nokia 6235i(it might be called the 6236i tho), its a candy bar, but i dont know if you like candy bar phones but nokia's are excellent w/ signal and reliability , it has a vga cam, w/ video, speakerphone, fm radio but it doesnt have bluetooth, the samsung a850 is really nice, but imo the razr might be the best choice, it has all the features that most people will want and it doesnt have the vzw interface
