nephew needs a new phone

My nephew is 16 he just lost his mother and is moving in with me and my wife. He has metro pcs and his phone screen is busted but he can still make and recive calls. I have never had metro pcs so i dont even know what type of network it runs on.
Do you have to buy metro phones or can you get phones unlocked elsewhare?

First i would like to say that i extend my condolences to your family for their loss and to answer your questions
1. metro pcs runs its own network
2. you can buy metropcs phones online at metropcs.com, or go to a metropcs store and the website will show the nearest stores, buy a phone at your local metropcs store, ebay.com(u can find some good deals), letsTalk.com, or get a phone from someone who has a metrophone and is not using and activate it in the store, you can do it over the phone(using a landline, their number is on the website) but I personally would not recommend that(their customer service is horrendous).
3.you can only use metroPCS branded phones, they will not unlock any other phones that is not in their database

And thank you for the condolances I have never had kids now i have two tenage boys. It has been a month now that they are living with us i have never spent so much time driving before. there is always somwhere they need to be.
