help - using phone as a modem to access internet

I would like to access the internet using a laptop, connection cable and the phone as a modem using Sprints unlimited Vision access plan.

I have been told Sprint doesn't advertise this possibility because they want us to buy their expensive wireless cards and download at per KB data rates.

1. Are there any provisions in place for Sprint to block this or charge per KB?

2. Will minutes be deducted from my plan while using the phone as a modem through Vision?

2. Any advice on configuring and accessing the system would be greatly appreciated.

There are two ways to connect your laptop to the cell phone. 1. connecting the modem in your laptop to the cell phone at 56kbps. This method uses the normal voice portion of your cell phone and initiates the equivalent of a normal voice cell phone call and is billable at the normal rates that you pay now. 2. connecting to the cell phone via your laptop USB port with a data cable using the Sprint 3G network at 115,000 bps. This connection is free, does not use any voice billable minutes, and is available everywhere in the US where Sprint has service. Throughput will deminish as your signal strength gets weaker. Many times you can connect even when there is no voice service but this can result in intermittant service. You will need to install ...

good post, but I believe that if the first method is used, you will be billed fr data usage, unless the special option for this is chosen-i forget what it's called--second method is best, if you can get it to work, but also requires a vision phone, and option for it to be air-time free.

First, if you use your phone just to connect through a modem as if it were a regular phone line, it will use your minutes and will also charge you $0.39 / minute unless you have the wireless web, not Vision, on the account already.

Secondly, if you use it through the data connection kit, you will get contacted by Sprint PCS and asked to stop, if you dont stop, they will cancel your service. Per the terms and conditions which are on the Sprint Website.

"PCS Vision services are not available for server devices or host computer applications, other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions, or as substitutes for private lines or frame relay connections. Unlimited PCS Vision plans/options are only available with phones...

I think Sprint should get their sales team in line with their marketing and their policies team. The salespeople are selling them and saying, "you can connect your laptop to the phone and browse the internet on your PCS vision unlimited plan".

I wish Sprint would get a good Pocket PC Phone like the SPH-i700.

Oh well.
