Using the diagnostics machine we have in the store, Sanyo out perform any other phone in the U.S. The put out roughly 3-4 RF than other phones, especially Samsung. If you go to Sprint, choose Sanyo, you will not be disapointed.

i completely agree i'm on my third sanyo(scp-3000,4500,5300) and looking foward to the new 5500(videophone)that approved by fcc today.

p.s hope the change in antenna type doesn't affect reception(stub/extendable like samsung a600).

To be honest with you, the antenna are there primarily for looks, they really don't do anything, they are plastic. Most of the manufactures, and celluar providers did a survey on if consumer would prefer an external antenna over an internal. The majority chose external. And manily becuase people FEEL that they get better reception with the antenna is up.. This was true back in the day with the old analog phones, but now most digital phones technically have an internal antenna, and the external is just for looks.

The antena does work, but really doesn't help when in digital. If you take the phone into analog, you can notice a difference with it up vs. down.

Kinda wierd when all it is is a piece of plastic. How does plastic pick up signal??

There is metal on the inside of the plastic.

Unscrew it and look if you don't believe me. There is a small piece of metal that runs up the inside of the antena that leads to a bigger piece in the tip. The plastic coating is what is flexible and is what keeps it from breaking or bending.

I use both a sanyo 4700 and a 4900. In a somewhat fringe area, pulling out he 4700's antenna, make a noticeable difference in both reception. I have not noticed as much difference in the 4900--

I always thought the 4700 was the best sprint phone that I have owned.( as far as reception goes, battery life. If they would just have more than 8 one touch buttons.

It occurred to me that after posting a testimonial about the 4700, I remembered the test screen functions:

I am not a radio tech, but I believe the rec level db is an indication of how well the unit receives, on my 4900, in a fringe area, the db goes up about 2-2.5 db when the antenna is down.

Could some of you tech types advise what the rec db level indicator means?

Well as I said even if there IS metal in the antenna.. Is doesnt do anything for a digital signal. Antenna are only ever good for analog. And basically if you have a all digital phone, its just there for the look.

That is what I said, except the 4700, 4900, 8100... are all dual mode not digital only. The Nokias, I agree that the antenna is pointless, hence the reason it is hard to get out.

I posted earlier that extending the antenna on a 4900 in digital mode seemed to change the db display to the good; with further experiment this is probably not true; but I would have bet(maybe wrong there too) that my 4700 performs noticeably better in fringe areas, with its extra long antenna, extended..AGain, further experiments with the 4700's db meter seems to show very little if any difference, antenna up or down.

But, my question is, does this db meter mean anything or not--both of you are writing with more info than I have, so what do you all say on this?

Forgot, but as to the original question on the top post; I have used several samsung's (2000,3500, 6100, 8500,n200)--then by chance bought a 4700 used, for the speaker phone--it appeared to work better than any other sprint phone I had owned--i have read this may be due to the new 1g tech stuff or whatever; also own a 4900 and a 5300 (still believe the 4700 best)-

Finally the question: do the new samsungs perform as well as the sanyo's. The sam's have some features I miss--but the main priority is a phone that works. advise, comments?

First let me say that I work for sprint PCS. I am one of the top specilist in the enterprize so take my advice either as lead or with a grain of salt.

As for reception I have found that Sanyo's do tend to be better. However, on your phone usually under phone info you will find something called PRL version. The most recent as of 10/25 is 10021 if your PRL version is ANYTHING else I would call *2 and have your account tagged for an update. Assuming you have a WLNP compliant phone you will be able to just call back to *2 and get your software updated over the air. Once the software is updated you may not nessesarily need more power on the signal end.

Secondly, there is a diagnostic test that a sprint sales and service store can do (not a ...

Since you have that inside knowledge...i have looked at other threads and am wondering.. i am due to get another phone and have been looking at the 8100 which looks like a great phone..but really want SMS... is Sprint going to offer this again soon and... should I wait until SMS phones from Sprint are available.. my understanding is that it will not work with current phones.. if yes how long ... 6 months..?

Well the answer to the question is a complicated one. We're comming out with the successor to the Sanyo 4900 (called RL2000) the first of november (don't quote me on launch dates) But the thing is that ANY PCS vision phone can do SMS. The only difference is that ours is web based at the current time. if you don't like that part of it then go to 3gupload.com and download (for free) a program that will do the messaging on the handset itself and not on a web based application. Now I'm a BIG fan of the 4900 model it has an impecable battery and the RL2000 will have a rough and rugged body design. then again it will also retail for around $200. Before you buy call into customer care and see if you qualify for the new mail in rebate incentives.
