My mother is a sprint customer.I however am not. She recently got her phone replaced and got a new plan. What is funny is they told her she had no roaming. Since I work for another wireless carier, I asked if she is paying the 5 fee Sprint has for the roaming option. She said no. She said the sales rep told her that the no roaming was included in her plan. My first thought was that they may have been packing it in the plan price. That was not the case. I live in rural ohio. My mother comes over to show me her new phone. It says no service. I check the settings on her phone. You could imagine how shocked I was to find her phone on home only. It wasn't set to automatic so she couldn't pick up any extended network. I set it to automatic. Oh my,...

The only reason that a rep would set the phone to Sprint Only would be to better utilize the network. The only time you need to set the phone to automatic is to receive a signal when you cannot pick up a sprint tower. You really should read the users manual and actually learn what your phone does. A sales rep is not gonna care one way or another if a customer roams.

What a dumbsh*t remark by paytheetfplease. 🙄 Why would the agent give a damn what network your Mom is using. He doesn't have to pay the other carrier for using their tower. Like Sprint Junkie said, read the manual. 😁

Furthermore, I'm not sure if you're in the wireless industry or not, but if we had to explain every single aspect of the phone and the network to the customer, the lines of every retail store @ every service provider would be out the door and down the street. You've got to see it from both sides of the ball.
I try to explain the difference between "Sprint Only" and "Automatic" to customers, but more often than not it goes in one ear and out the other. When a phone is set to "Sprint Only", that insures that Ready Link, Vision services, Picture Mail, Applications, and all of our other proprietary services will work correctly.
And I do apologize for my previous post, but it's that kind of attitude "well they didn't explain it to me....

Definitely something only a "Sprint junkie" would say.
The very same thing happened to me except the Sprint reps had my phones set for Auto and guaranteed "no roaming charges ever". Further, the extended coverage never did work at my home or anywhere in my area without turning off the Roam nag, on the recommendation of a ...

Do we really have to have this discussion again you Verizon deadhead?
And if you really want to talk about a mis-leading map, let's take a look @ VZW.
After you click on the following link, put in zip code 86023 (Which is the Grand Canyon, AZ):
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorCo ... »You're kidding me right? Coverage in the Grand Canyon huh? That is the most mis-leading coverage map out there, but in all fairness, every carrier has dead spots in places that they say they cover, They are all LIARS!!
But really Magellan, we love the fact that you finally found your dream service provider, so why exactly do you keep coming back to this forum?

just to let everyone know the zip code provided is not the grand canyon i live in AZ and this is way off go back to the map humdizzle. Verizon wouldn't claim to have service where we don't it would hurt our reputation to much. but the area that you gave us a zip code for the service is actually really good i go there almost twice a year!!

IF YOU SAY SO 🙄 ...........but if you go to http://www.mongabay.com/igapo/zip_codes/AZ.ht m
These are the zip codes listed for the Grand Canyon: 86023 Grand Canyon 928
86434 Grand Canyon Caverns 928
86023 Grand Canyon National Park 928
And look 86023 is listed. WOW!!!!

Actually, Sprint was my first choice because of the PCS Vision; very good feature.
Why do I keep coming back? Well, maybe to prevent some poor unsuspecting senior citizen or other poor soul from getting sucked in to 2 years of hell. Obviously, Sprint reps don't give a rip.
Hmmm, the Grand Canyon....I'll have to try it when I go out there this Fall.
Strange, you're the first who hasn't challenged the roaming policy of Verizon vs Sprint/Cingular et al. Maybe I am having a positive influence on my fellow man after all. 😉
...
why do you think sprint has that 50% rule? becuase there is no point of being on the legacy if you arent using it!! better stick to an affiliate.
i dont get why its such a big deal.
if you dont like the carrier move on.
...
If you want, you can just come back to Sprint and we can lock down your PRL so you can only use your phone where we want you to.
That way we can be just like Verizon.
Or maybe you can just go in and change your PRL around so you can use it.
Every company has their own way of getting you for roaming, they either charge you more, dont let you do it (which to Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon is the same as no roaming) or they have a 50% rule like Sprint. I rarely roam and my phone is on Sprint only 99.9% of the time and I dont have any problems. If you do, drop it during the 14 day trial and go somewhere else.

What a dopey thing to say. So, Sprint customers should never ever expect to use their phones outside the Sprint PCS network?
Way to go. I did not even hint at the fact that we as reps would not want our customers to use the roaming option on there phone. Why would we care. I guess for someone like yourself hitting a couple of buttons to better utilize the options that come with your phone would be to much like multi tasking. Can you handle it.

...coverage maps for all carriers do NOT include interfernce by buildings, trees, mountains, hills etc...but w/e i have no roaming and don't pay the 5 dollar fee, it's included in my plan, and i roam quite often when im out in the boondocks driving back to my parents house from college. And i never see the charges on my bill...why? cause a majority of my minutes are non-roaming read the fine print in any T&C and it'll say that if your roaming minutes exceed more then half of non then you will be charged...i am a sprint rep also, and i explain to my customers about the auto/sprint feature and leave it UP TO THEM to use whichever they want, they are the consumer, i notify them of the consequences and if they choose to do so they have no right ...

I find allot of the responses on here to be born of ignorance and low integrity. I do work in the wireless industry and have technical knowledge of how the devices work and what there settings are for. When someone buys a phone from you they are building a bridge of trust. It is of low integrity to give them the understanding there is no roaming charges when it is merely how the salesperson set the phone up. Is it really a no roaming plan when the phones settings are what keep you from getting roaming charges? I think not. It is merely shaded truth. You are giving a perception which is not the reality. You should disclose this to the customer when the phone is purchased. You do know what full discloser is don't you? Maybe this low integrity ...

First off, something is said for the fact you work for "another wireless carrier" and you didn't get your mom on the same service as you. Secondly, settle down, how do you know that the phone didn't come preset in sprint only? And are you another one of the plentiful conspiracy theorists that think the man is out to get you? No rep will purposly set the phone to sprint only unless the customer comes in complaining about roaming charges. I think you need to take a deep breath and realize that it's not a big deal. You set the phone to automatic right? So those 5 buttons you pushed make a whole company terrible? Get a clue.
...
It's not pushing the buttons that makes it an integrity issue. The sales rep programed the phone and handed it to her ready to go. He said that she would have no roaming charges. At no time did he disclose to her it was just how the settings on the phone, she owns, are set. Does it hurt a rep to say if you switch the phone to automatic you may be charged for roaming? Most users are not savvy to the technology. Most customers wouldn't know what these settings are let alone where to find them on the phone. But, the customer does own the phone. They may fiddle with their settings not knowing what they mean. They may set it to automatic and get hit with a roaming bill after they were told they wouldn't be charged for roaming. Yes it does say in ...

Well talking from experience. Setting a phone to Sprint only is a habit. It only benefits the customer to be on the Sprint network. As stated before. It insures that Readylink, vision and other Sprint applications work properly.
Also you stated above that your mother was told she would not have any roaming charges. That is absolutely correct and has no falsehood. Setting her phone to sprint only ensured that she wouldn't acquire roaming charges.
Also you stated that setting the phone to automatic by accident when fiddling around with it may cause the customer to roaming acquire unwanted roaming fees. Well the phone does have a call guard that notifies the customer that he or she is going to acquire roaming charges if they make or tak...

OH the joys of reading... reading is something everyone should have learned throughout our early years in school. Now, in regards to the "so called no roaming", it all depends on the plan the customer selects, only the newest plans the Fair and Flexible and the New Free incoming plans have the NO ROAMING feature, unless you have an older plan that you are able to add the $5 no roaming service. with that in mind, which plan did you sign up for, do you have your original paper work?? probably not, and that is another issue that customer have. When you sign a legal binding agreement dont you think you would hold on to the paperwork so if you have any disputes about what you signed up for it is easy to remedy the situation rather than going ...

hmmmm, just curious as to what provider PAYTHEETFPLEASE has??? if your mom is using sprint, and your coverage and service is soooo much better, why is it you did not hook her up with your provider?? maybe you couldnt close the deal... or is it the dropped calls and lack of coverage? this is not an attack at your Mom or you, im just curious as to why you did not help her find the correct plan or company to suit her needs?

Possibly they live in different areas and Sprint provides better coverage in the mothers area or maybe sprint provides better coverage at the mothers house on the other side of town! Please remember that it's not the majority of people that live with there parents until they are 40!

The bottom line is Sprint has some serious issues with their roaming system (and policy) whether it be extended network or otherwise.
It sounds to me that his mother had a similar problem as we did with respect to "no roaming" claims.
I could see if there were pockets of non-coverage when we be bought our phones, but it turned out the entire region wouldn't work without roaming charges. I suspect there are many other areas that have the same problem and Sprint knows it.
One positive thing I'll say is the 2nd level tech support guy that worked with me was genuinely puzzled as to why the phones wouldn't work without roaming charges and tried everything he could to help.
From that point on however it went downhill. He created a tic...

People tend to jump on the bandwagon of bashing other carriers, this is not uncommon. Let's all get real here, every provider is going to have customers that are unhappy and denying it is just pure ignorance. I've had more people come in here complain about tmobile and verzion, then any other company. So there's always people going to be displeased w/ one carrier, then the other. Btw I don't work for Sprint.

I use roaming a lot and exceed 1000 min of roaming per month often. I have never been billed for any of this roaming since I usually use another 2000 min on the sprint network. I have found the extended network maps to be conservative in many cases. I have been in areas where sprint claims no roaming coverage exists but it does and I'm able to use it with no charges. I'm not sure if that area in Michigan is iPCS territory or not but if so that could be the problem. Last I checked iPCS markets still charge for roaming minutes. I have roamed a bunch all over Michigan and had no charges appear. Find out if this is an iPCS area and if it is you may have the answer to the problem.

First. Lets clarify. Phones are not smart. They don't have a "preferred" network to detect. They simply pick up the strongest signal available.
SO.... lets say you are driving down the freeway in a digital area with a digital signal. And you drive by an analog tower that is closer than the digital tower that you are connected to and putting off a stronger signal. Well if your phone is set to "automatic" it will pick up the analog signal because it is the stronger signal and then drop the call, for customers working in buildings or living on the fringe of service this is a VERY common issue. Hence the reason that a rep would tell a customer to keep the phone on "sprint only". Prevents more than usual dropped calls.

Actually you are wrong. The prl which is loaded into it does exactly that. Preferred roaming list. Software which tells the phone what towers it has access to. With a prl you can give maximum coverage without roaming charges. 😉

Last I checked, the phones are usually set to Auto. The reps would only change that if it is to better use Sprints services/or towers, or were requested to.
Now "Roaming" may show up on the phone, but shouldn't show up on the bill. I say shouldn't because it may, due to something that may be innacrruate in their automated billing system. They are trying to integrate Sprint and Nextel, so..there may be some issues i guess...

i just think that it is funny that this thread has gotten so crazy. everyone can say something poorly about every service provider. i know that "no roaming" for EVERY wireless provider means "no roaming while on OUR network" cingular and tmobile have no roaming but if you don't have their service, you don't have service at all. sprint at least offers roaming on different providers and you can use up to 50% of your minutes each month on roaming and not pay a dime. verizon, that's a different story. cingular and tmobile, again, they can brag no raoming, but their phones don't even have the capabilities to do so.
and, like everyone else has asked, are you that poor of a rep that you can't even CLOSE your MOTHER on your wireless provider of ...
