WiMax/4G-Some clarification

So I wanted to know about this new 4G stuff? Is Sprint ushering in the next phase of wireless technology?

Yes
WiMax is like Wi-Fi but on steroids. As for the "next phase of wireless technology" WiMax is just the technology that Sprint has chosen to roll out and use.
