Hi,

My gf has a Samsung SPH-N400 from sprint that her mother purchased for her as a graduation gift a little over a year ago. She's havin problems that I just can't explain. I'm not sure what all of them are off the top of my head and she's not here right now to list them for me, so I'll just ask this.

Are there any firmware or software upgrades that she can get from Sprint in order to update? If so, will her contact list, ringers, preferences, etc. be erased by doing this? If they will I'll make sure she backs them up before having the phone upgraded.

This info would be greatly appreciated as she's gettin kinda frustrated with it, and it's really the only way we can communicate for free since she's sans computer and calling her dor...

No, no, nothing will be erased. She probably needs both a PRL and software upgrade; go into a Sprint store (one with a tech on duty- not an Express Store) and this will be done for free, just tell the rep what's going on and request an update. Also, request testing while it's back there. If it fails any test, and is within warranty, you can get a replacement shipped to you for free (sometimes it's shipped to the store and you can come pick it up... but that's just as good because when you go in you'll need to swap the old phone for the new, and while you're tjere you can get a phone book swap for free so you won't lose any phone numbers). Take advantage of this ASAP, because soon there will be a $10 deductible on even warranty replaced hands...

ash! quit telling people there will be a 10 dollar deductable! that is a lie! you are confused. the 10$ just applies to locklines extended warentee!

I REPEAT THERE WILL BE NO $10 DEDUCTABLE FOR DHRP!!!

the $10 deductable will only be for the new extended arentee program that lockline will be roleing out!

no ash ther will not! soon lockline will charge 5$ a month for erp and an enhanced warentee all roled into one. it will be 50$ for erp and 10$ for the enhanced warentee. that is not the dhrp! the dhrp will stil be free!!!

sprint will also offere the enhanced warentee for 2$ a month! after the 1 year and for cracked screens if ytou have the enhanced warentee for 2$ a month it can be replaced for 10$ but this will not cover liqud damage.

please ash please get your info strait you will panic our customers for no reason at all.

go back to your traingin (unless you have not had it yet) rember about properly setting customer expectations? it will save you a lot of hassel and you will have a lot less customer escalations

I keep her PRL pretty up to date for her, so I doubt that's a problem unless they've released a new version in the last couple of months. I'll see her today, so we should be able to jump into a Sprint direct store and grab that software upgrade. It's good to know that her phone book won't be erased, after a little over a year of use it's rather large and being without a computer it'd be a pain to copy by hand and re-enter.

My only other question is this: She lives in Raleigh, NC and is currently in Greensboro for school. Will this matter at all when programming the PRL?

One other question: I'm not sure if her phone is still under warranty (I doubt it since it's over a year old, but ya never know), but if it is and it fails a diagnostic test what would replace it? I understand that the N400 has been discontinued by Sprint and I was curious as to what she could expect if a replacement was offered.

if we have the N400 in the warehouse (which i believe we do), they'd send another one. if not, we have a list of phones we go by to determine which is of equal or better value to replace it with. and yes, the PRL is loaction-based... meaning if she is going to school somewhere other than where she lives, it's very important to have that updated. the Perferred Roaming List needs to be up-to-date with her location so that the phone is closely acquainted with the new set of towers around her and the new place in the network she'll be spending most of her time. so.. try those updates/ugrades... if they don't work and/or the phone fails one or more tests, and is enough outside warranty that they won't replace it... you may need to get a new phone...

Thanks a lot. I tried updating her PRL today (we didn't have time to drop by the store), but when I hit *228 it said "the code you have entered is invalid". I'm not familiar with Sprint, but I've never encountered this message before when doing the PRL update. I'm perplexed. Could it be that she's not in her home market that causes the *228 command to not work, or does Sprint use something different than *228?

yeah, try just *2. if it doesn't do it automatically, tell the automated menu to do it, or ask for a representative and tell them to get you set up so you can dial *2 again and have it updated that way.

prl is not the sorce of your problem. prl does not affect your phone much at all. unless your phone has no prl in it then it doesn't know what to do.

most people have no idea what prl is. most sprint reps do not even know what prl is. there is one myth out there that is compleatly wrong. some sprint reps will tell you that prl will make it so you can pick up the new towers. that is a load of crap. and compleatly not true. the phone will pick up any tower that is emmiting the signal that it uses.

what prl really is is "Perfered Roaming List" it only affects roaming. now hear is the big kicker. do you know what prl really does? what that perfered roaming list is, it is a list of all the carriers it will tell your phone which carrier to ...

this is true. software and prl do nothing for the phone. software upgrades can add more ring tones to the phone, fix freezing, but do nothing for signal. prl means you can roam cheaper. you hit the nail on the head disturbed1

Yes, I'm aware that PRL means preffered roaming list. I keep mine quite up to date, and try with hers as well so that her phone knows where to go when she comes out my way for school or to visit.

And yes I think the PRL could actually help her problem considering that one of her major problems is that some of her v-mail is gettin delivered several DAYS after it was recorded. It feels like maybe her phone isn't connectin with the network properly to recieve the messages. Now that could be the phone itself, or it could just not know where to go to find it's network. As for dropped calls, I drop more than half of the calls that get dropped between us, which is why I'm switchin, not her.

yep it's the n400 alright. She swears that she hasn't had many problems with it at all. Course she doesn't use hers as intensively as I use my v60. I'm told it hasn't frozen up or gone blank in months although it did happen for a while. This v-mail problem has really only started since she came back up this way for school three weeks ago. Her home area is Raleigh, NC, about an hour and a half down the road from here. I'm sure her mom would appreciate the cheaper roaming though so I'll keep her PRL up to date if it's alright with everyone. At least until I can get them to switch to Cingular with me so we can talk for free.

the prl (perfered ROAMING linst) has absolutely nothing to do with her voice mail. prl only involves roaming. the voicemail is almost certanly a network issue. what she really needs to do is call into customer service and have them log a network truble ticket for her. what is mostlikely happening is that the program in her voice mail that sends out the notification is out of wack and the truble ticket would find that and fix it for her.

also when she is in her Voice mail she needs to be useing the star key to terminate the call insted of just simply hanging up on it. that could be the issue as well. if you do not use the star key to exit voice mail then it still thinks you are connected and so when people call and leave a message the noti...
