Content Help Please - Was I mislead?

Hi, I'm new to these forums as a poster, but I have been reading them for some time now. I used this site alot to help me determine what phone/service I wanted. So before I ask my questions, let me say thanks.

I have a few questions concerning my phone and how things work for Sprint.

I purchased a LG535 phone recently and while I had the free Vision Plus service, decided to play around with it some so that I could see how it works. I have never really intended on keeping it past the first free month because I do not think I would really use/need it all that much.

I decided to try to download a game to see how that works, because I figured I might do that in the future, and wanted to see how it works.

After having downloaded an...

If the rep mentioned a "card reader", then he/she was talking about downloading to your computer, and putting it on the miniSD. This is the "usual" way to download ringtones and so on to your phone, at least, in the absence of a vision pack.

I really can't address your other questions, other than to say that with my cingular phone, which does not have an expansion card, when I download a game, it stays on my phone. They store it as well in a place called "my locker" where I can downl...

I don't know of any carrier, phone, or whatever that gives you the option of saving/installing/running 'protected' content anywhere else than on your phone. As far as the licensing goes, that's a crap-shoot. I've seen most new ringtones go for $2.99 instead of the usual 99 and only allow usage for ninety days...

The content can be confusing. Lets see if I can shed some light on it.

Ringtones are usually 2.49 unless they are video ringtones, those are 2.99 and as far as expiration on ringtones goes, once you purchase a ringtone it is usable on your phone forever, you can delete and re-download the ringtone for 90 days after that you must re purchase it to download again.

Games range in price from 2.99 - 7.99 and depending on the title come with unlimited usage(usualy more expensive) 90 day license, or 30 day monthly recurring license. you have to read the descriptions to know which one you are purchasing.

What about free content?

I was basically told that any ringer, mp3, video, etc I put on my MiniSd card I would be able to use. Is this the case?

It seems like I am being restricted to having to buy all my content from only Sprint and have to download it only through Sprint.

But...how do you GET the content onto the miniSD card?

That is the fundamental question. According to your post, the rep told you that you could use a "card reader" to load games, ringtone, etc, onto the card, and from there, on to your phone. A "card reader" is a COMPUTER based device. You download the content to your home computer (or a library computer, if you don't have a home computer, and your local public library has card readers (the ones around here do; I obviously can't speak for others!)). From there, you can put it on the card. From the card, you can copy it to your phone's memory if you want to have reasonable performance out of it, or, in the case of MP3s, many people play them directly from the card. I don't kn...

Oh I also forgot - why does content such as "Chessmaster" say that I have unlimited liscense yet in the properties page for the game, it says it expires in one month?

Am I going to have to redownload the game in a months time despite the fact that I have an unlimited license?

If so, it seems to me that the only reason Sprint makes it that way is to increase the money they get from Vision packs and download costs.

By "protected" content I assume you mean items that are downloaded the official Sprint website.

What about content that is free and readily available on the web - I was made to believe that with a card reader I would be able to acquire items without having to pay and download them from Sprint.

There are tons of free stuff out there and it seems I can not use any of it and I was led to believe I would be able to. I'm still not sure if I am.

Protected could aldo mean copyrighted...

I don't know of too much free stuff on the web. I subscribed to that freeringers website which is a onetime charge and then unlimited usage up to four phones. The only problem is depending on what you d/l your carrier will still charge usage whether it's in the form of kb usage or per message usage.

That's the point though, if I am able to download content through my computer and use my card reader to store the card then I will incurr no charges for downloading by Sprint.

That was the whole reason I decided to get this phone was due to the convenience that the expansion slot would afford if I indeed could do that.

The sales rep made it very clear to me that I would be able to, but now it seems I can only do it through Sprint for, surprise, more money.

Btw, there are tons of free games, ringers, and applications that are free of charge and are not copyrighted. Some of my friends have some really cool games they made themselves in school and I was hoping to be able to use them too.

Why do you keep saying that you have to go through Sprint and that you won't be able to save it onto the MiniSD? Have you tried it yet? I don't see why you wouldn't, and I haven't read anything from anyone else saying they weren't able to do that. Maybe you got a bad phone and it's not reading the card.

File-type issues, perhaps...

You know, I pitched a fit when I got one of those DVR dealies from my digi-cable provider and found the all the component-out ports (USB, RCA, SATA, etc) were purposely disabled by the manf per the cable companies. They were assuming I was going to burn a DVD from something stored on the internal HDD from pay-per-view and sell it. NO! The problem was with my wife and her GD Oprah, Montel, & whatever recordings, we got no room...

If you read the thread, you will note that towards the bottom of the thread, the OP mentions that she hasn't actually attempted to copy stuff to the card and then access it on the phone. She is just spouting off that she is worried that she might have been mislead/lied to by the sales rep.

What in the hell is going on here? I came to this forum in the hopes of reaching those from or with Sprint who had the knowledge to answer my question and instead I get people answering bits and pieces of questions they don't even have the answers too and making assumptions in regards to other situations.

I came here because after trying to make things work over and over I got sick of trying and wanted to know if it was even possible or I was making a mistake.

I figured who better to ask if not people who also have those phones and services but MUPI you already said, "I really can't address your other...

I will do my best to help you. First I have an LG phone and am able to download whatever I want. There are no Restrictions. You can download Any Games that you want to your home computer and transfer them to your SD card and then play them on your phone. You have to play them off your card they will not transfer into your phone. You can load any mp3's onto your card from your computer and play them from your card. You can not assign a ringer from your card but you may be able to transfer from your card to the phone, but I am not sure about that. I hope that this helps you.

Thank you, that is helpful.

Do you have directories where sepcific files have to be stored on your expansion card and if so what are the names of those directories?

I read elsewhere I will need a directory for different files but do not know what the names for the directories should be.

Exactly, but I read now that I will not be able to assign ringtones to my miniSD card and will not be able to access the games because of the restrictions in place in the phone software thanks to Sprint.

I was led to believe it would be possible and am now wondering what I should do concerning my service - if it turns out that I will be unable to do the things I want - I will cancel and be sure they know that the reason I first signed up was because the rep I had spoken...

Well....... Giving you the option of copying/moving a ringtone or game to your miniSD card gives you the oppurtunity to give it to someone else w/o them paying for it...

I always felt the memory option in most phones was for picture xfer and storage... Most new PCs have media card (miniSD, mem stick, etc) readers pre-installed so you can easily power down the phone, pull the card and pop it in your reader...

Guns can be used to kill people, but they still sell them.

What I don't understand is why restrict legitimate users from being able to use their device as they see fit solely because some people abuse what the device is capable of. There are examples of this in most any technology.

More to the point, miniSD comes with CPRM copyright protection so that should not even be an issue if the vendors create their products in accordance with the standards.

I still don't even know if I am truly restricted like that, but if it turns ...

Why don't you copy some things to your miniSD card, and then see if you can copy them on to the phone/use them as you were promised before you start whining about how you were mislead and lied to???

As of right now, the rep said you can copy things to your miniSD card using a card reader, and the load them on to your phone (I suspect that you can't load a ring tone from the SD card...what would the phone do if the card is removed?) but you can with other sprint phones copy ...

You know, on that point, I've seen people complain about copying a PST file from Outlook to a mem card and pop it back in their phone and wonder why the phone doesn't acknowledge the file. The only thing I've seen phones recognize (based on OS Windows for a PC vs *insert phone OS here*) are JPG, GIF, some MP3, and etc. Not WAV, PDF, DOC, unless we're talking about a smartphone with Windows Mobile...

It does depend on the phone, if the phone can play midi files, you should be able to use .mid files as well. I sent myself a URL to a midi file I had on my computer, and downloaded it to my phone no problem. I now have a 5 minute long ring tone 😈

My phone also supports mp3 and some other wierd format...

Your understanding of how hardware works yet insisting on trying to answer questions you have no qualifications for is quite irritating. Please read below.

Ok, I've read this whole thread and I'm going try to answer your questions as best as possible. I'm "qualified", as you put it because I was a previous owner of the LG MM535 for 3 months and had Sprint Vision service since it was first ever introduced.

The rep may have something different in mind when he said what he said. More than likely he was either not knowledgeable or he wasn't technical enough for you to specifically get the answer you were looking for. Let's get beyond that.

First, I'm going to tell you what you can do with your memory card:

First, when you go to camera mode, there is an option to store the photos to the memory card. I believe they get stored in the directory "DCIM/LGF100" or something like that. You can ass...
