FRUSTRATION with Sprint -- IDEN THINNING?

AlanHenney

My elderly mother depends on her direct connect to contact me (her only care-giver).

It is unreliable now in the Washington, D.C. area. When I called Sprint customer service, they didn't have much advice, other than to switch to another phone with a two-year agreement and slower (yes, his word) direct connect.

Who has the best direct connect in the cellular world? I need a phone with direct connect that my 80-year-old mother can easily use (we have the ic502 now). I may have to change carriers and phones.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Alan

PS: Here is my letter to Sprint CEO (so far, no response):

He is not talking though about regular calls. He clearly mentioned direct connect services. Sprint is mostly reducing excess capacity at this time on the iden network which can cause some in building signal changes. I do agree with you though that most customers have been aware of the iden network shutdown in the future and should prepare accordingly. The frequency used by the iden network is going to be freed up for Sprint's Network Vision, this lower frequency will eventually be used to supply better signal strength in buildings and signal further from cell sites.

This is why his post makes no sense. If they own phones capable of making regularcalls on a different network, which is unaffected ...

If you like the ic502 get the kyocera duramax. Pretty much the same thing with a camera and the dc works surprisingly well. Sprint has given lots of notice about the iden shutdown btw.

To AllanHenney:

I have the exact same issue with my elderly father. He can't push the buttons on the keypad, but he CAN press the PTT button, which I have programmed to One-Touch Direct Connect. So all he ever has to do is press the PTT button once and I know he needs something. Even if he can't talk over the DC, it alerts me that he needs assitance and I can call the elder care facility where he lives and tell them to get a caregiver into his room.

In our area, the new Sprint Direct Connect seems to be working fairly well, I think it might just be a worthy successor to the original iDEN PTT. Not exactly the same, but overall I think it is a decent replacement, and workable. You should give SDC a chance, because you have 14 days to try...
