Is AT&T really the fastest?
Being an average tech savvy customer and a user of T-mobile, Sprint and AT&T. I've gained some startling facts on the three carriers. I'm going to approach this with a unbiased point of view. Here in North West Oklahoma AT&T has a faster 3G network in the areas they have 3G but you go north of town 20Mi and Sprints proves to be the faster carrier. It seems AT&Ts EDGE network can't compete with Sprints 3G 😲 and the slowest T-mobile, just can't seem to compete with the other two carriers. Here is the break down of speed in rural North west Oklahoma.
AT&T: 2Mbs+ 3G
AT&T: 160Kbs+ EDGE most rural areas
Sprint: 2Mbs Rural 1Mbs Urban
T-Mobile: 45Kbs Rural 120Kbs urban

Careful, you're throwing a 2G technology into a 3G comparison. Of course EDGE can't compete with Sprint's 3G, that's like saying a bicycle can't keep up with a motorcycle - of course it can't.

True that is another way to look at it considering EDGE isn't a broadband technology 😛 .

Roaming here but they inked a deal with a local carrier Pioneer for spectrum sharing with Verizon LTE. So Verizon is about to gain coverage in the NW two thirds of Oklahoma. Not sure how this will affect Sprint as they are currently sharing spectrum (CDMA) with Pioneer also.

The FCC has kept Verizon from most of OK for many, many years. There are a few places around the country where different carriers are forced into roaming agreements.

That study is getting to be about a year old now and the market has gone through a lot of changes.
How these studies are structured will cause a lot of variation in the results. If you go by technology deployed you'll get a pretty accurate picture of who has the fastest in your area, assuming the carrier is supporting it with enough base stations and backhaul.
That would look like this:
GRPS < EDGE < 1Xrt < UMTS 3.6 (WCDMA) < EVDO < HSPA (UMTS 7.2) < Wimax < HSPA+ (UMTS 21.0) < LTE

Goes to show how desperate some carriers are to keep themselves looking good. Sounds like one really large political arena 🤣 . The point I was trying to get across in the post was that no carriers should claim they are the fastest just because they are in a few city's.

The wireless industry is one of one-up-manship, you'll frequently see carriers quoting one of these studies as a reason they're the best. Be it because of speed, customer service, network, devices, dropped calls or what have you.
These things may or may not hold true in a customer's particular area.
HSPA+ is fast, but if you're in an area where T-mob only has GRPS deployed speed is no reason to pick them.
When you get past the marketing buzz you see that it's a dynamic market.

The numbers are based on a network avg and the numbers change all the time. As u can see there are places where att is the fastest and places where Sprint is the fastest. The same can be said about verizon and tmobile they all have markets where they dominate in data Speeds. Att just has a higher network avg speed then everyone else. Sprint has one of the most reliable 3g networks with very consistant 3g speeds and there 4g is even faster but there network avg has to beat att before they can claim the title. 😎
