Reading the article, I can only assume that he snuck in a call to his lawyer between calling his wife and 911.
I have to say, though... one phone. Years of phones. Millions of handsets produced, and only one incident. This doesn't happen very often, if at all. I can't say that his phone was broken or if it "exploded" on him, but either way, this is an isolated incident.
And yes, I'd be saying this about ANY phone.

They showed the phone on the news here in Dallas. The screen underneath is completely intact. It looks like he took a icepik to the phone. I have blown up some stuff before and this does not look like it was caused by an explosion.

I think it's worth it to Motorola to replace the phone, for good PR, but if you manage to break the outer screen without damaging the actual LCD, then something is weird there. I don't think it would be worth a settlement, but I'm sure it will happen just to shut him up. Calling and driving to his wife to take pictures before calling 911 says a lot about the type of person he is, in mu opinion.
