What was Nextel like?

I recently downloaded the TiKl PTT (push-to-talk) app for my Hero and use it almost exclusively to talk to my wife. (Get it, it's free and doesn't use any minutes).

As fast as it is, I sometimes wonder if Nextel is/was even better. How many of you folks used to work for Nextel or used their phones before coming to Sprint? How many of you still use Nextel? And how has Nextel's merger with Sprint affected the company as far as call quality and customer service are concerned?

I'm asking these questions because I joined Sprint long after it had absorbed Nextel and know almost nothing about it.

For PTT, Nextel is unbeatable. The best thing about their system is that you can use it even without network coverage. In other words, if you are inside a metal building or on a ski resort where cell towers don't reach, you can set a Nextel to off network mode. The range is about 6 miles.

Despite Nextel, seemingly falling off, when I went to Sprint training they heavily beat the idea of Nextel's unmatched capabilities in PTT. They rehashed over and over, sell nextel sell nextel, and I do. I carry one on me at all times, give my sprint trainer in orlando a hollar every once and a while when I'm showing it to a potential customer. When he replies within 5 seconds they are pretty impressed considering he is pretty far away.

Nextel was great. They had good coverage, good customer service, and a steady client base. When they merged with Sprint everything went downhill. For the longest time Sprint customer sucked so bad. It got to the point of lawsuits against Sprint/Nextel because reps (in-store and over the phone) where renewing customers agreements without telling the customers.

Sprint has since then done a decent job trying to repair the image they created though they are still bleeding more customers than they make. Now they are using 4G to sell and insanely cheap price plans.

I originally worked for a corporate nextel store. Oh, how I miss those days ☹️ We would just chill in the back room all day long and then the door bell would ding to let us know there was a customer LOL! You could upgrade whenever you wanted as long as you signed another two year contract. yea, their phones are big but they are def dependable (except for a few ie: i830). Business accounts were easy to set up at well. *sigh* I miss my nextel company ☹️
