Sprint is an acronym, do you know what it means?

sprint as an acronym? this is new to me.
the origional name was united telacom. in the 1980s they had a joint ventrue with GTE to build nationwide fiberoptics. the new company was named GTE Sprint. sprint refered to the enhanced speeds and capacity. when GTE left the venture the new company was simple renamed sprint. other then that i am not aware it is an acronym. but i could be wrong
so what is the acronym for verizon? or cingular? how about nextel? 🙄
