Cell phones as business phones

I just want to vent a little...

I work in a Sprint store and we handle insurance swaps for manufacturer defects only. The upside is that we do not charge the $50 deductible. Any physical damage, liquid damage or lost/stolen claims we refer them to assurion.

Typical situation:
Customer brings their broken phone to our store to do an insurance swap. Phone has obvious physical/liquid damage so I inform them we can not do the swap in store. Customer gets upset saying the infamous line "but this is my business phone!" They go on to say that Sprint is costing them money, they can't go without their phone for a few days. Normally the customer storms out.

My POV:
Why would you make a wireless device you're main source of communication? ...

Lol i hear ya bro! I had a guy come in on Saturday wanting a new phone because he broke his old one. He goes, "I dont wanna re-new my contract, so add insurance and let me file a claim. I have the M610 i know they'll send me the RAZR V9M" I go the usual baffle that I cant just add insurance whenever we choose. I told him, if you went out and wrecked your car RIGHT NOW and didnt have car insurance, do you think you can just call the insurance company so they can fix the car and charge you a small sum? he goes, "Thats what Geico did! I called to get full coverage, they added it for me and the next day i payed my deductible" Ha ha he stormed out. Later that day he comes back with a phone from Altel wanting me to activate it. The flame just flic...

That's ridiculous! Some customers need to pull their head out of the butts. Gotta love the ones who think they should be given full discounts everytime they get tired of their phone. It's like they want us to take $150 off a new phone every other month! I love it when say they know somebody who has AT&T or Verizon and they do full discounts for them whenever they sign a contract, lies lies lies!

That sounds like a typical case of insurance fraud right there, 😲

There is a solution to this though you won't like it. Have the guy make his insurance claim with Asurion. Then have him buy a phone at full retail. When the Asurion replacement comes the next day then he can return his full retail purchase for a refund. Everyone is happy except for operations and the rep who has to process the refund. But Mr. Bigshot doesn't miss any of his important business calls. And after all isn't that what truly matters?

That's a route often taken at my store. Only problem is Mr. Bigshot doesn't normally feel like he should have to fork over $200-$300 to be satisfied. Not my problem if he's too hot headed to do it. You're right though. Thanks for the response. 😎

Or he should just buy a cheap phone to use as a backup while his other is being serviced. If his cell is worth thousands of dollars of business to him, you would think he would be saavy enough to have a contingency plan.

if he's such a big shot you should be able to bill it to his account...as long as he returns it within the his bill cycle he won't even notice the phone on his bill because it will be credited back...the problem is the customers that do the majority of the complaining aren't able to bill to account due to terrible payment history and bad credit...

The only problem with doing the 30 day thing is that you're probably causing the company to lose money since the phone can't be sold as new after the 30 days.

You're right. At my store we use those returns to help close sales since they're discounted. So when a customer buys one just to return it a week later we get a little annoyed.

I told you that you wouldn't like it. I hated to do it when I worked in retail, too. So I used it as a last resort option. You know...when the only options left are smacking him to end his irritating whining or selling him a phone at full retail.
