I've always been a big fan of Sprint, but I can't imagine that Verizon and Alltel together would be a good thing for Sprint. ☹️

It COULD be a bad thing, but on the other hand, I'm betting that there will be compromises that will have to be met in order for the FCC approval needed.

For example, Alltel and verizon own GSM networks that they operate strictly for the purpose of selling roaming coverage to GSM carriers like AT&T who might not have any in those areas. They also WILL overlap in some places where Sprint has no coverage.

My bet is that they will either have to sell off some of this overlap and GSM coverage, or be forced to allow other companies to roam for reasonable f...

why would a CDMA carrier pay to setup and maintain a GSM network just to sell it for roaming? it cant be in any way cost efficient

Verizon and Alltel didn't set their GSM networks up. They were acquired through other companies they bought up that had them. Both companies sell roaming privileges to GSM carriers.

not to mention wireless carriers hate when they have to pay their competition because their customers are roming off their capable network. if you are a sprint employee in retail you know its important to get our customers phones in sprint only settings, unless they are knowingly going out of a sprint coverage area

Bad thing about setting a phone to Sprint only is someone may start thinking Sprint sucks when they go traveling and see no service. I have had several friends that really thought Sprint sucked because of their phones being set to Sprint only. They were ready to cancel until they saw me using my phone and was wondering why they had no signal. I showed them what the problem was and they were very grateful for it. That was probably three years ago and to this day they are still Sprint customers. They don't use a lot of roaming but probably 30-40 min a month. It may cost Sprint a bit in roaming but they by far make it up in what they pay per month for the multiple lines.

Another way to look at it (and this is the Sprint employee overly optimistic way) is that I'm sure there's a decent number of Alltel customers that are there b/c they were unhappy with Verizon for whatever reason. I would imagine most of those customers would want to look elsewhere for service, be it with Sprint, ATT, T-Mo, etc*...

I don't see any carrier have customers switch in any larger numbers b/c of this merger, but perhaps some from the above example.

*I realize there # of carriers that would fill out the "etc..." is dwindling.

Although I still have to give the VZW fanboys a hard time, and I'm sure that there will be "money under the table" to ensure this deal goes through, I actually favor this merger. I don't think it will hurt Sprint or any of the other ...
