Alltel vs. Sprint

Ok, I just posted a few days ago because I'm thinking of switching to Alltel, but Sprint's new plans have me reconsidering switching back to them. I had them for a while (with no problems at all) and went to Metro PCS to save money (I was always going over my minutes).

My question to all you brainiacs: who offers better coverage as far as voice calls go? I hear Alltel's coverage is better in rural areas, but I'm in a major metro city. I also hear Alltel's coverage is better indoors. Please help me decide!

The thing to remember in terms of Alltel rural market coverage is the fact that they have lost the abilty to privide you with coverage from CDMA 850 towers. In other words, rural market analog coverage no longer exists. Sprint is not affected by this because they are a purely digital network. In terms of data coverage Sprint has the largest national broadband network. Also they are ahead of the comptition in offering 4G service in the future. For voice coverage, Sprint is second to only Verizon currently but there are alot of changes coming in 2008 in terms of tower expansion. A dropping stock price usually is indicative of a drop in plan pricing, (see Verizon and At&t). The consumer usually benefits in this scenerio. Without a doubt...by a ...

Why would they lose CDMA 850 when it was AMPS and D-AMPS which was turned off?

Alltel and Sprint run off the same Frequency (CDMA), but have different coverages depending on tower location. Sprint can roam off Alltel towers with no charge under any Nationwide coverage plan, while Alltel charges to run off a Sprint tower unless you get a package for $10/Month.

Here in Michigan, Alltel is the best carrier for Norther coverage, and one of only two carriers that work in the Upper Pennisula. The drawback is that Alltel does not have any towers in the greater Detroit area.

As far as coverage indoors, it all has to depend on whether the phone will be running off a digital or old analog frequency (analog is being phased out), and it matters on how far you live from either tower.

The choice is yours, I would reccomend ...

I went to their website and after about 10 minutes of looking, I found a coverage map, but it's not detailed enough to quote. I guess Chad isn't up on that yet 🤣

My advice: check the coverage in your area to see who is better, because at the end of the day, that's the main thing.

Sprint's indoor coverage is outstanding! Best I've ever had. All t...

That's an odd point for me. My Sprint phone works inside wal-mart and large dept stores, where my cingular would get no bars. However in my house, my sprint has 2 bars where my cinglar was full. I'm assuming its some kinda steel vs wood thing, but in either case. Go with Sprint.

Well, there's also the issue of tower proximity. The closer you are to a tower, the better your signal. I have noticed though, that the newer GSM phones work better inside than did their old TDMA system.

Ok let me clarify a few things for you guys, First if you live in atlanta , Alltel does not service Atlanta, so that should be an easy pick go with sprint. Secondly you can roam for free on alltel nationwide plans for free, alltel and sprint have roaming agreements and they roam off each other for free. and as to the 10 a month feature for alltel if you have a plan that does not have roaming you need that feature, ie like local plans, or regional plans need that feature once outside of the areas described under the plan.

Alltel gets service just fine in Atlanta (I go there often). Voice network is fine, but data was a killer. I lost EVDO and was running off 1X, and yes I did update PRL's. Alltel's coverage map shows EVDO in Atlanta, so I may have had to to a OTA program to pick it up; Data may not matter to you, but it's something to consider if you're looking at tredding into smartphone territory. Sprint is fairly strong in Atlanta/Decatur area, on MARTA, and through some tunnels ... but so is Alltel. Alltel does also roam off Verizon with no charge, and they get service damn near everywhere.
I'm not an Alltel fanboy, as I've had Sprint, Verizon, Metro PCS, now Alltel, and I've switched only because data is more reliable and cheaper with Alltel. Th...

Thanks for the response, ptg06. I am definitely looking to get a smartphone. Check out the 4 phones I've owned:
Ericsson T60d, Sony Ericsson T61d, Audiovox CDM-8450, and now the Samsung SCH-A645... pathetic! I told my girlfriend my next phone is going to be ridiculous!
Anyway, so is data with Alltel reliable or not? I just want to make a good decision with this. I like both companies, but one has to be slighter better than the other, right? Or is it six in one hand, half dozen in the other?

I live on the southside in a county where Alltel offers coverage. I work and play in the city (and north of the city) where Alltel does not offer coverage.
