Upgrade Question?

I have a question. I am new to Sprint, just signed a 24 month plan and I received phone at a promotional price. Fine, good, no big deal I promise to stay with Sprint for 2 years.

So 18 months down the road I accidentally break my phone, I don't have the insurance because I personally feel $7 a month + $50 deductible is not reasonable. So I go to the Sprint store and I pay retail or full price for a new phone. Does that cancel my eligibility to get a new discounted phone 6 months down the road? If so, why? Sprint didn't offer me any discounts for the phone. It didn't cost them anything, in fact they probably made some more money off of me?

I'd like to know, so I can return my phone if this is the case. I'm in my 30 day return period.

Technically- yes. Any new phone activated for the first time resets your eligibility in the systems.

In that situation, if I were you, I would speak to the rep or manager on duty and see if they would agree to honor a discounted upgrade down the line. It's a case by case decision for store management or customer service to decide upon. If they are okay with it, have them note that agreement on your account.

The other option, of course, is to buy a cheap phone off ebay or the like and keep it as a spare just in case... It's a good idea, and cheaper than insurance, to have a back-up phone.

Thats not right if you don't use a discount then it does not reset you upgrade eligiblity or at least it shouldn't. The only time your upgrade eligiblity is when you recieve a discount.

Just get the insurance if you know you're gonna be hard on the phone, it will save you so much headache later. If you're gonna be cheap, then you'd better take care of that phone like you gave birth to it.

Also depends on the phone you buy if you want insurance. 24 months of TEP is $168. Add the $50 deductible and you still come out ahead if you buy a PDA type phone that retails for $400 or more. And technically, you're eligible for the $150 upgrade credit after only 22 months, so insurance is definitely worth it IMHO. Unless you get a free or cheap phone, then, its probably worth it bc the phone will probably crap out after a year or so, and you're obviously too cheap to pay $ for a good phone, which is why you bought the cheap POS in the first place! 😲 😲 😲

Not saying it's "right," just that's how the systems and policies treat it. That's why it's good to involve a manager and have the account noted that no discount was received when the new phone was activated.

All of this could be solved if Sprint added one field/variable into the system that accurately shows the last date a discount was given, regardless of ESN changes. Just that small change would make things so much easier on everyone.

Actually, in the new UBP system, it is under the History Queries for Equipment Discounts. It will tell you the date and the amount of the discount, or it is at least supposed to! Not sure if it really works yet! 🤣

In iRMS, there is NO way to look at eqp history on an account,so if you go to a store, prepare for a headache, delivered to you by Ensemble/UBP

Your upgrade eligability is determined when you receive a discount on a phone. If you go to www.sprintrebates.com and find out that the discount is no longer there, then you may go into your local store and they should override that. It is all based on when you recieve a discount on a phone and not when you purchase a phone out right. The system my reset your eligability time frame, but that is not going to matter.

Here is how it works. I've worked for nextel even before they merged with sprint. When you first activate your new line of service you get the phone at the cheapest price. Then after having that phone, not the account but the phone for 1 year you get $75 off the retail price. Then after 22 months you get $150 off the retail price, which is the same pricing as the new customer price. People get the idea that since they have had their accout for "8 year" they should get something for free or discounted. They go by how long you have had you current handset. So if you bought the phone at retail or full price then it did not take away your rebate or renew your contract. Hope this helps
