WASHINGTON - Shares of Sprint Corp. and Nextel Communications Inc. rose Thursday after The Wall Street Journal reported rising Wall Street speculation that the two companies could merge.

While such a combination would offer some benefits, especially for Nextel, it would face several tough hurdles involving management and control between equally matched partners, analysts said.

β€œSuch a deal would be much more strategically beneficial to Nextel than Sprint,” said Goldman Sachs analyst Jason Armstrong in a research note. β€œAnd, therefore, put Sprint in a better bargaining position, which ...

Maybe that's why VZW was so crabby about the FCC allowing the spectrum swap for Nextel. The team would make an awesome company IF they could pull it off. Nextel owns qchat, and they now have an abundance of 1900mhz spectrum. And Sprint has .... well Sprint has alot of spectrum, too. πŸ˜• But I still get good vibes from the idea.

yes i also agree with your assessments. i belive that this will be a great marriage too. both companies have weaknesses, however when you join the two companies i belive that those weaknesses will be gone..

the only way that this merger happens, in my opinion, if nextel's top 3 execs (ceo, cfo, cto) all stays with the new combined company. they have a better track record and i belive that they are stronger and more reliable then sprint's mgmt.

lg, cain marko makes an excellent post. i was thinking the same thought of "Maybe that's why VZW was so crabby about the FCC allowing the spectrum swap for Nextel". i think the whole 2 and a half years of the vzw holdup on the consensus plan was in reality away to stop nextel from being aquired. i knew after nextel bought the rights for qchat from qcom that they would be pursuing cdma. most important is that when they said they were going to see about the ev-do rev a i knew another reason to go to cdma. thus; i belive those two factors played an important and huge roll in deciding to go to cdma, by a possible of a buy out or merger with a cdma company. i know verizon wireless and nextel would never happen, thus; making nextel and sprint happ...
