Confused

So I just had an interesting conversation with my friend and I bring this question because I'm simply dumbfounded. My friend had Nextel, came to end of contract, and went to upgrade. She upgraded to a Hybrid phone and here's my confusion, the man at the store made her change her number, or it would cost her an additional $35 to keep hers. She took the new number, no huge deal, but why does an upgrading customer have to pay to keep their number? Does it have something to do with her getting a Hybrid phone? Or was this guy just crazy?

Thanks.

sounds crazy, but ill almost believe anything if you say ensemble caused it.

in this case, it could be true. not sure. but since the hybrid phones are sprint devices, not nextel, and they MUST be in ensemble, the probability is pretty good.

it could also be that he gave a crap about the amount of time it took to get the customer working. imagine having to port a number directly into ensemble. im so glad i dont deal with that crap.

I've ported numbers from Nextel to PowerSource and Nextel to Sprint. As long as they are already customers they shouldn't have had to get another number or been charged to keep theirs. The only thing they should have had to pay was an upgrade fee. But ensemble seems to change things daily, so who knows.

It was either:
1) Cust was in a market served by nextel and NOT by sprint (possible affiliate market)
or
2) Rep saw a chance to make a new line commissionable sale.
Did the rep tell dad that he would have to call nextel to cancel the old number??

If so, the answer is 2, if the other line was cancelled in store, then answer 1

I'm thinking it was number 2 since they were going to charge them to keep their number (meaning keeping the number was a possibility).

She pretty much was sorta screwed over, what he did was made her upgrade an new activation, pretty much he churned her. He couldve done an upgrade at no additional charge but made it look like he was helping her. She couldve upgraded, kept her number, and not have to pay an extra $35. Costing her an additional $35 was some major BULLSH*T 👿

**WARNING! JUST MY THEORY!!**
If he ports a number from Nextel to PowerSource, it's an upgrade, and he gets almost nothing for commission. However if it's a new phone number on the PowerSource device, it's a new activation and he makes more commission, and gets closer to his quota. So he may have tried to charge $35 to keep the number to make up what he would have lost.

I only say this because they caught a rep doing almost the same thing near me, but with Nextel to Sprint ports.

Or ensemble sucks...could be either.

he created false churn for an additional activation.

Well it all played out in the end, he promised better service with a Hybrid phone and wouldn't you know it Sprint didn't have any coverage here, just Nextel. So she took it back and got her old phone and number. Basically I said if you want to stick with Nextel I'm going next time, and to a different store.

People people people!!! This could be the result of the lovely indirect dealers 🙂 They do it with Nextel to sprnt ports all the time. They tell them that they can't do the ports and make them get new numbers. The upgrade fees used to be $36. As of April they are $18. The reason why the hybrids suck at service is because they don't roam and get service everywhere that sprint phones do. I'm no saying that all indirect dealers are like that but there are some shady ones around here.
