third-party charges

wondering if any of you've heard of this one:

Lady comes into our store to prepared for a switch to VZ(heh heh). She has Sprint(sorry). So do I, so I know how wonderful the CS dep. is. She obtained a new line in '06, new number, etc. and I will admit that she is not the most observant individual.

The number she had received had a joke a day feature from a third-party company on it: the charge was .99 a DAY. She has teenagers, so she was just thinking that the extra was voice overages. She checked recently, and found the true problem; the package. The kicker is that the package was put on sometime in '05, before she had the number, and she had blocked text messages when she purchased it. So . . . when she called CS, they told h...

i have seen this a few times and i do believe it follows the number and is automated to send a txt that paticular number everyday or whatever the subscription details are. so if that person who subscribed to it in the first place never cancelled itand just runs away from it without actually looking into how to get rid of it(like putting the source text # in google and finding out exactly who is doing it and how to get rid of it) then yes, when someone gets that "new" number it will just continue to txt it. blocking the text is like turing your head when you see someone is getting mugged, even though you dont see it, its still happening.

this is an easy fix.

do not call CS. call tech support.

say "i need this number blocked for all short codes in the PMG"

you dont need to know what that means, just say it, and AFTER the current bill cycle, it will stop.

peace

yes, it would follow the number forever, until blocked by the carrier.

Blocking the number will not always cancel the number. It will still get charged to your account even if the phone does not recieve it. Make sure the customer tells it to stop on verizon or it will continue to charge.

On Sprint you can block all premium messages but that only fixes the new ones. Old ones will still charge.

yep, if you ported the number to VZW, it will still be attached to that number, not the carrier!

what if I want to know what that means?

she had a one-time occurrence, won't happen again.

she texted the correct number back with a 'stop' command, and they replied affirmative.

thanks for the help

well that is good. thats some really rare good luck. generally their "unsubscribe" system conveniently doesnt work. thats why we block them.

here is a brief explanation of why i am right, but in order to understand it, you must have had at least basic tech support training for sprint.

basically, sprint's billing system for messaging is called the Bulk Messaging Gateway(BMG). this is the system that keeps track of inbound and outbound sms, or text messages. it counts them, and reports the number to the billing system.

because of what we call Premium Text Messaging Services (you referred to them as third party messaging services, which is also an accurate description) sprint has implemented a new system referred to as the Premium mes...

it was . . . thankfully, her charge was on a daily basis, so if another charge occurred, it would not be that extensive.

Not too informed about Sprint tech support, but your explanation was understand-able.

thanks.
