Same towers as Verizon if I'm in Sprint's extended network?

I live in area code 39503 (Gulfport, MS). I currently have Verizon but am considering moving to Sprint due to their phone selection. The problem is I've heard their coverage sucks here. BUT if I'm in Sprint's extended network, wouldn't they be buying time off of Verizon's CDMA towers? Therefore, would I have the same coverage that I currently have with Verizon with Sprint?

Wouldn't quality of service, and reception in the widest possible range throughout the country count more than phone selection? If you've heard that one carrier's "coverage sucks here", why would you put your ability to make calls in jeopardy?

After all, once you discard the gingerbread, isn't the thing for making phone calls?

That's why I'm trying to determine their coverage and if they use the same towers as Verizon. I just got a conflicting story that Sprint's coverage is good here from a Treo 650 user that lives locally also. Just hate to get a phone, sign up for a contract, just to cancel it in a week to see how their coverage is, what a pain.

davidl340:

All you have to do is borrow someone's phone and try it in the localities that concern you. If you get reception, without roaming or being on an extended network, you will have answered your own question.

yes, that would be nice, unfortunately, I don't know anyone with Sprint that will let me borrow their phone.

Ahhhh.... all the more reason tho stick with Verizon for the IN network unlimited mobile-to-mobile call at no additional cost.

better yet just barrow a phone from sprint. go to the store pick out a phone you have 14 days to try it out. take it with you where ever you want to use it make sure it will work for you if it does not simply return it with in the first 14 days and only pay for what you have used. it is called the better wireless guarantee

In almost 100% of cases, SPCS does NOT use the same towers as Verizon. A SPCS phone would only pick up a Verizon signal when there was no SPCS signal available. Roaming on Verizon towers would cost $.50/min + $.25/min LD w/o the America option (for up to 50% no fee roaming from corporate area registered phones-different from affiliate areas). Here is the coverage for Gulfport:
