Android 2.3?
It is time for Google to step in like Microsoft has done with WP7 devices and demand a certain degree of uniformity and consistency across its Android devices, such as similar hardware and a commitment to timely updates.
Android 2.3 is more than a year out of date, there is absolutely no excuse for ANY manufacturer to still be releasing new devices with 2.3 on it. Would it REALLY be so difficult for Samsung to release this device with Ice Cream Sandwich on it?
Google needs to impose a policy, any new Android device has to have the most recent version of Android. No more of this 'more than a year out of date the day you buy it' nonsense.

I have to agree with you on this one. I'm tired of having to sell new devices with old software. How am I supposed to convince the customer that this phone is better than say the Pantech Crossover when they have the same version OS?
Customers want to wait until the new software is released so they aren't behind, so they aren't buying. It looks bad for everyone! ☹️

i'm sure when the device was being developed, Android 2.3 was just becoming available to most Samsung devices...
regardless, i agree that Google needs to step in to streamline the process....if your device is shipping with antiquated software, there should be an expectation set (and subsequently kept) of when a software update to the latest version will roll out ..

That's probably true, and maybe the problem is that Google is not keeping OEM's 'in the loop' so to speak....
A few years ago manufacturers were justified in being confused because Android was on a very rapid update schedule...
1.5 came out in April 2009, followed by 1.6 in September and 2.0 in October then 2.1 in January 2010 and 2.2 in May 2010.....the rapid pace of development was utterly ridiculous.
But since that time, Google has settled into a nice cycle here of one major update per year...
So if an OEM is planning for a device in late 2012 for a release in early 2013 they really should be able now to antici...

According to statements made by Motorola, yes.
Google did all of the hardware integration work to get ICS working on the Galaxy Nexus with its TI OMAP chipset... and that's it. Anyone using any other chipset in their phone (like the majority using Qualcomm chips) has a lot of work to do to get ICS working on their phones. Google only released version 4.0.3 of Android - the version they want manufacturers to use - in mid-December, which isn't much time for manufacturers to work with it, adapt it to Qualcomm chips, customize it, and put it through all of the necessary testing for a carrier rele...
