2013? So.....when Verizon finishes rolling out 4G LTE to their ENTIRE network footprint (aka-everywhere), T-Mobile will begin rolling out LTE? I wonder if they will role that out to just the large cities too like they do now with HSPA? So LTE, HSPA and 3G for the cities and maybe just EDGE for everywhere else still. Is this how they do business in Europe? I would imagine Telefonica, Vodafone, etc would wipe them out. Verizon will be all LTE, AT&T will be a blend LTE/3G, ditto with Sprint. I think T-Mobile should commit to building out their native data network big time and to eliminating EDGE for, as a minimum, 3G. Would be so nice if Google or someone with deep pockets & vision bought them off of DT.

In their defense, there is no rush to deploy LTE first. HSPA+ may not be as fast as LTE but it's better than 3G. LTE phones are expensive and suffer from terrible battery problems, but by 2013 , they will be cheaper and hopefully battery technology will improve. Waiting until 2013 to start deploying LTE is smart. Another good move on their part is to move 3G services to PCS (it will give them compatibility with many ATT phones including the iPhone). AWS is a popular band choice for LTE in America so I think this is a smart move by Tmobile.

So true, when it gets down to it, no matter if its TMO or AT&T, a good HSPA+ connection is more then adequate for mobile use. (tethering excluded)

So you are recommending that they disenfranchise existing customers with older 2G/EDGE devices?
Eventually that will happen, but forcing it depends on how many subscribers are still with such devices.

Yes actually I am. Very, very few people still have EDGE only devices. T-Mobile should migrate these people to low cost or free of charge 3G devices. Eventually everyone will be on 4G LTE coast to coast starting with Verizon. May take a few years (or a decade with TMO, lol) but thats the future.

T-Mobile will have that in a cool century 🤣 Im no TMO hater either, had them for 10 years until I started with Verizon. Didnt realize how bad their data network was until VZW. Have high speed 3 or 4G data everywhere. Road trips with T-Mobile meant no data coverage at all for entire states sometimes. Would have been better off with Sprint but now really spoiled with Verizon.

t-moble lost customer last quarter and they are the only carrier that lost customers! I dont know why the feds will not approve the buyout since the spectrum and bandwidth is all jammd up! the government can be stupid sometimes!

"T-Mobile plans to reduce the amount of 1900MHz PCS spectrum used for 2G GSM services and refarm -- or repurpose it -- for HSPA+ in the PCS band. By moving its 3G network services from its AWS spectrum (1700MHz) to its PCS spectrum, T-Mobile will free up space in its AWS spectrum for its future LTE network. T-Mobile also points out that using 1900MHz for 3G will make its devices more compatible with the networks used by other operators in the U.S. and abroad. T-Mobile also hopes to acquire additional AWS spectrum from AT&T and other sources."

Tmobile coverage will improve greatly with the 4 billion in cash and spectrum assets its getting from ATT and other sources. Plus the upgrades they will be giving to their towers 🙂 come up!

I hope so. Im rooting for T-Mobile. I have Verizon now but anything the other Big 3 can do to improve/expand their networks I'm for. Give Big Red as much competition as possible. Also gives us consumers choices. Tired of just VZW and ATT providing good, full data coverage to the entire nation. Hope TMO and Sprint do indeed invest in not only improving but expanding their networks.

Indeed...TMo just drew blood from AT&T and I don't think anyone knew just how valuable that spectrum and cash combined was at the time. If DT will just double down here in the US, TMo will have a brilliant future and AT&T will rue the day it agreed to those buyout terms.
