They did it without the US DOJ approval?

What's going on here? The Google-Motorola merger had to be approved by a bunch of foreign countries but I haven't read any such interference about this buyout.

They didn't buy all of Ericsson, they only bought out Ericsson's stake in their own joint venture.

I know but still, it is a significant transaction that transferred ownership from one entity (a joined ownership) to another (Sony.) Just watch what EU would be doing in similar situation when American companies would be involved.

Yeah, you could be right about that. And even though the Motorola deal was big financially, it was kind of ridiculous that there was such a freakout over one corporation owning both a hardware brand and an operating system (which was normal for everyone else).
