Will they have to purchase more spectrum? I know they have G-Band PCS spectrum but what about for the future?

Sprint has the spectrum (double of what ATT and Verizon have combined-from Nextel purchase). That's why they still are unlimited. They just need $ to build.

I have heard this claim several times in phone scoop forums that Sprint has twice the spectrum that Verizon or ATT has.

The ten thousand dollar question is why was Verizon told to divest some of Alltel spectrum a few yrs back in some markets if Sprint had soooo much spectrum in its possession at that time.

Very similar question question can be asked about the recent defunked ATT and Tmobile merger. ATT was told it could not get all of Tmobile spectrum in some markets.

Why does all these divestments need to happen if Sprint has the same amount of spectrum of ATT plus Verizon in its own lonesome?????

Remember that Sprint has spectrum in four separate technologies now: IDEN, CMDA, WiMax and LTE. I believe they are planning on decommissioning the IDEN network in favor of an all CDMA (or hybrid CDMA/LTE) solution, which may allow them to reuse the IDEN bandwidth for other uses.

Build-out is the issue, they don't have the $$$.

Above and beyond that, consider what Sprint owns. IDEN has always been dependable for voice transmission, but has never been a data friendly network. The phase out is to make room for the new Network Vision system which will be a combined CDMA / LTE network as I understand. The potential future for the IDEN bandwidth is unclear. The question is of adaptability. We'll just see what happens.
