Interesting that Google is paying $12.5 billion (which is about $12.5 billion more than Motorola is worth). Remember, they purchased Motorola shortly after losing the Nortel bid (they were invited to bid IN the same group as Microsoft and Apple, mind you.)

Interesting as well, because Google has expressed no interest in FRAND licensing.

My guess is, Google plans to use these to convince Apple, Oracle, and Microsoft to strong-arm them in instances where Google was already guilty of infringement or where they were already collecting a settlement.

Which, of course, is quite hypocritical from Google's earlier public statements.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Did you ever think that maybe Google is just protecting themselves (and Android as a whole) from frivolous lawsuits? Since Apple feels like they can't just compete but must also litigate their competition to submission, I approve of this and hope that this keeps the field fair.

Frivolous lawsuits?

Android wasn't even a touch-based OS when iOS landed. Ask anyone on the Android team- they quickly re-tooled the OS to be touch-based. Apple is POed because things they spent years developing (palm rejection heuristics, multi-touch, etc.) were ripped off.

Non developers can say "Oh, well, how can you patent squeezing two fingers and shrinking something" , but that's far easier said than done.

If Google wants to keep the field fair, they should develop awesome things Apple wants to put in their phone. I'm not talking about things Android got to 'first' , but did a lousy job of (Copy+Paste, anyone?), but honest-to-goodness killer features.

Apple started this fight, Google is merely defending itself against Apple's aggression...

And Steve Jobs made it clear before he died that he motivated by little more than pettiness and spite, telling his biographer that his goal is to completely destroy Android and take all of its products off the market, he was even quoted as saying that he was willing to spend all of Apple's $80 billion cash reserves on lawsuits if that was what it took.....which is psychotic, but goes to show how serious Apple is about this..Apple is not just out for blood, they're out for death....

Google has no choice but to fight back...
