You are absolutely correct in stating that newer technology costs more but trust me when I say that the amount taken in on a monthly basis from existing subscription costs easily pays for those improvements. The main reason that companies like AT&T and Verizon cost so much more monthly is because they have many more physical locations and overhead than other providers but I would argue that Verizon has at least twice as many corporate retail store not to mention dealers and they do not charge an upgrade fee unless you do it earlier than your contract expiration...
