I hear this line from half the people on phonescoop about whatever carrier they have a problem with at the time.

The truth is that AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and any other carrier our there are structured as corporations, which by law have to "care" about their stockholders which may or may not be customers.
As a stockholder, I would try to run any idiot CEO out of town if they started caring so much they went broke trying to cater to everyones wants.
