All this does is waste screen real estate for something that is already handled quite well with the menu button.

Agreed. I love the context-sensitive Menu button. Love how it works across all apps and how it is universally functional.

Sad to hear this new direction...

Actually it's a good move, the reduction of hardware decreases the chance of failure in the phones overall.

I agree, loved how the Menu button always just brought up the menu.

This whole "I want to look trendy by not having any menus" thing annoys the hell out of me. The whole point of menus is to not unnecessarily take up screen space with a whole bunch of options that you aren't using right now. It's perfect for limited-screen-size devices.
