That sir, is a myth. I have used android devices for years, devices with speeds ranging from 600mhz to 1.2ghz dual core, I have used devices from many, many manufactureres, including HTC (amaze) and their myTouch line (HTC magic), including different optimus handsets, including the Optimus 2x and Optimus black, and several samsung devices, including the dart, galaxy S II, and the Galaxy 550.

Never had a fragmentation problem with any of these devices at any given time. Android fragmentation is a myth created by apple fanboys, and even if you did have that as a problem, it is easily correctible and not something to complain about.

Um, a) I never said I had a problem with Android fragmentation, and b) it's definitely NOT a myth. Unless you discount the HUNDREDS of articles on the issue.

NOW who's the fanboy?

It is one thing to claim that Android fragmentation is not a major problem, that might actually be true because most consumers don't really give a rip about the issue, but to claim that it isn't a problem AT ALL?

You can't possibly be serious.

Look at this:

http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/27/android-fragmentation- ... »

Of the 18 most popular Android phones released before July 2010:

7 of the 18 smartphones never ran a current version of Android.

12 of the 18 ran the most current version 'for a few weeks' before a new version was released

10 of the 18 were at least 2 versions behind within their 2 year contract period

13 of the 18 stopped getting updates less than a year after release

15 of the 18 ...

let me give you the shortened version:

fragmentation exists due to Android phones being released with antiquated versions of the OS loaded on it and rarely, if ever, receiving updates to the most current version.

although most consumers wouldn't notice this and wouldn't care even if they did, saying fragmentation doesn't exist doesn't make it not exist.

Any PC's today which run Windows 98 or ME are old computers that were bought when these OS were the current version....

But no one is today buying a PC with Windows 98 pre-installed.....all PO's today have Windows 7 installed, which is the current version. Moreover, all Windows 7 PC's sold today will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 when it is released, and maybe even Windows 9 too.

But with Android, you can still buy a new device today which has Android 1.6 installed, even though the current version is 4.0.

That's BAD.

Another big issue is compatibility with apps, there is pretty much no application that can run on Windows 7 which cannot also run on Windows XP or Windows Vista....

But the apps that Android can run depends very much on the exact version of Android you are running. If you are running a device which is two or more versions behind, a large percentage of the Apps in the Android Market won't be compatible with your phone. And the longer you use that device the larger the percentage of the apps that your device can't run will be.

If you're running Android 2.1 but the app you want only works on Android 2.3 or higher, this is a very big deal.

I don't know of a single android availble today running 1.6. As a matter of fact due to apples patent wars a big chunk of 1.6 phones are no longer eligible for sale in america(HTC) Which isn't a huge deal, just more fodder for this bs about fragmentation. Android users have the power of choice of what kind of phone they want, and you made a terrific point with all the windows oses, and it's still #1. The ONLY people that care about fragmentation are nitpicky iphone fanboy developers. Troof.

To find the ones running really outdated versions of Android you have to go to the bottom tier of devices, but they are there if you know how to find them.

Here is an Android tablet running 2.0

And here is one running 1.6, for sale NOW

So apple is better because android is open source and people can sell cheap crappy tablets with android on them? That is not googles fault, that is the consumers fault.

Indeed, I even conceded that someone could make a plausible argument that Android fragmentation is a good thing, or at the very least, that it is not a 'problem' that needs to be 'solved'....

My only point was to refute the claim that fragmentation does not exist.

Android IS fragmented, whether that is a good or a bad or a bad thing is a debatable question, but let's at least admit that it is indeed true.
