Its because carriers choose which phones get relesed here and because they have to build a much larger network than most European carriers and because of the "free phones" or discounted phones they can't afford to carry these phones and still make as much of a profit. That and because we are also set behind in this area when it comes to most technology.

sorry forgot to mention a really good example of something like this is Playstation 2 Games, most Japanese and European people have already beaten the game before we even get it here.

not to mention, we're much more of a pain in the ass to deal with if something doesn't work right and last. The reason Japan gets so many more cool gadgets sooner or gets stuff that we never get is that if we went out and spent $200 on something and it konked out or didnt' work as advertised and then some companies would go out of business. It's a little more widely accepted to get some highly beta versions of stuff out there.

Because there isn't enough demand for it - the American public (making generalizations here) wants a completely different thing than the European/Asian market wants. Americans like their phones free, flip-style and full of cheap flashy features. Joe Shmoe American isn't going to pay $600 for a phone with features, so why would a carrier roll out a model of a phone that they'll only sell 2000 of when they could roll out something cheaper and flashier that they'll sell 20000 of?

Europe is one unified and big market and plenty of other countries employ the same 900/1800 mhz bands and gsm. You make one GSM phone, perhaps dual band maybe not, and that addresses a market of over 300 million users in europe alone. That is good.

You make one GSM phone for america and you address 30-40 million people at best.

Japan is just a different world. In addition to demonstrating a love for gadgets (which i am basing on sales of them) the japanese spend lots of time outside of their home and are more likely than SUV happy americans to use public transportation (the latter also applies to europe). Mobile computing is easier when you are sitting on a train than when you are driving a car.
