I wasn't really saying whether it was ok or not, but if you go to the VZW website and pay with your credit card, Verizon is charged a fee by your Visa/Mastercard/etc. for that transaction. Verizon either has to suck it up and eat it or charge you for it.
I like the nickel approach but don't carry it too far
. I remember a recent well publicized case where a guy walks into a business and dumped a whole bunch of change everywhere hitting the employees. He was arrested
